Minnesota is mourning the loss of one of its most influential lawmakers after House Speaker Melissa Hortman, 55, was fatally shot in June. The brazen attack unfolded on the same night Senator John Hoffman, 60, was also targeted in a related shooting. Authorities identified the suspect as Vance Luther Boelter, who disguised himself as a police officer to carry out the attacks.
A Career Cut Short
Hortman, a longtime member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), represented District 34B and rose to become Speaker of the House. Known for her leadership and advocacy, she was also a devoted wife to Mark Hortman and mother of two children. Both Melissa and her husband were killed during the June attack at their Champlin residence.
Her death has left a void in Minnesota politics and heartbreak among her family, colleagues, and constituents.
Hoffman’s Fight to Survive
On the same night, Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot at their home in Brooklyn Park. Hoffman was struck nine times but survived against staggering odds. Weeks later, appearing before the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting in Minneapolis, he spoke candidly about his recovery.
“I’m still slowly recovering from my gunshot wounds,” Hoffman said. “If you want to see the pattern on my body, it’s the same pattern that’s in my red door that I no longer have.”
He described the attack as “pure evil” and warned that the normalization of political intimidation would threaten democracy itself. “Having our own homes violated by pure evil cannot be the new normal. I believe all Americans and Minnesotans want to talk to each other again without being demeaned and without the threat of violence.”
A State in Shock
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz swiftly activated the State Emergency Operations Center, pledging the full support of state resources to Champlin and Brooklyn Park law enforcement. “We are monitoring the situation closely and will share more information soon,” he wrote in a statement.
Walz confirmed Hortman’s death and Hoffman’s injuries, urging Minnesotans to stand together in the face of what he described as a deliberate attempt to terrorize political leaders.
The Suspect
Authorities named Vance Luther Boelter as the shooter responsible for both attacks. Disguised as a law enforcement officer, Boelter allegedly used that false authority to gain proximity to his victims before opening fire. Investigators are still piecing together Boelter’s motives, but the impersonation has raised further concerns about public safety and the vulnerability of public officials.
