“Don’t Give Them the Excuse They Want”: LA Mayor Warns Protesters As Trump Crackdown Escalates

LOS ANGELES — June 9, 2025
In a tense and defiant moment for Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass issued a stark warning to protesters: Don’t hand the Trump administration the excuse it’s already acting on.

The statement came amid increasingly violent clashes between pro-immigrant demonstrators and heavily militarized federal agents. With streets swarming in tension, Bass urged residents to resist being baited into confrontation.

“Angelenos—don’t engage in violence and give the administration an excuse to inflict all the damage they’ve been inflicting carte blanche for months,” she said at a press briefing Monday. “They’ve been waiting for a spark to justify what they’ve already put in motion.”

According to the mayor, the administration’s harsh tactics—raids, mass detentions, and secretive deportations—were not reactions but premeditated moves. The conflict, she claimed, is being used as cover for an agenda long in the works.

What set off the latest round of confrontations is still being investigated, but city officials say it was inevitable. “The National Guard didn’t arrive after things escalated,” Bass noted. “They were already here—pre-deployed before a single protest sign was raised.”

Community leaders echoed Bass’s warning. Civil rights attorney Elena Morales described the situation as “a carefully orchestrated theater of justification,” warning that “violence plays right into the administration’s hands.”

Across LA, peaceful demonstrators are growing uneasy as news spreads of plainclothes agents and unmarked vehicles detaining protesters off the streets—a tactic reminiscent of Trump’s first term.

“The government doesn’t need a reason to violate our rights,” said activist Devon Cho. “They just need a photo. A single clip of a brick thrown—and suddenly we’re the aggressors, not the victims.”

Bass’s comments reflect growing fears that the administration is actively seeking to escalate tensions to normalize martial tactics in immigrant-heavy cities.

As dusk fell over Los Angeles Monday night, chants echoed through the streets—many adopting a new rallying cry from Bass’s warning:
“Don’t give them the excuse. They already have the plan.”

Meanwhile, legal experts say that documentation of pre-deployment orders, if confirmed, could serve as damning evidence of federal overreach. But for now, the focus in LA remains on restraint and strategy.

“We must not fall into their trap,” said Bass. “History will remember who escalated this. Let it not be us.”
