GOP Rep. Faces Backlash After Having Elderly Woman Dragged Out of Town Hall

In a moment now echoing across social media and news platforms, New York Republican Representative Mike Lawler sparked public outrage after a town hall in his district erupted into chaos—culminating in an elderly woman being forcibly removed by state police for challenging his loyalty to Donald Trump.

The woman, Emily Feiner, a retired Jewish social worker and mother of two, has since spoken out about the incident. She says she posed a simple but direct question to Lawler: “What is your red line for standing up against Trump’s lawless administration?” When the congressman dodged the question with a reply about appropriations, Feiner says she became frustrated and called out again, urging him to answer.

That was enough, it seems, for Lawler to have her escorted out.

Feiner recounted her experience on social media and in an interview with Salon, stressing that she posed no threat and had been formally called on to speak. “I was certainly no threat,” she wrote. “I asked my congressperson what his red line was… and he didn’t answer the question, so I called out for him to answer it—and he had me removed.”

Footage from the event shows state police troopers approaching Feiner as she calmly but firmly refused to leave. “I’m not leaving,” she said. In response, the officers lifted her by the arms and carried her out of the auditorium, while chants of “Let her stay! Let her stay!” thundered from the crowd of constituents.

In photos captured during her removal, Feiner can be seen flashing a peace sign—an image that has since become symbolic to many of protest and resilience.

Reaction to the incident has been swift. Supporters of Feiner are calling her a hero for standing up to what they see as a cowardly response to valid dissent. Critics of Lawler argue that the use of law enforcement to silence a constituent asking a tough question reflects a disturbing trend among GOP lawmakers.

Lawler’s office offered a different version of events. A spokesperson claimed Feiner was “abusive and combative,” accusing her of disrupting other attendees and refusing multiple requests from troopers to leave peacefully.

But the video, now widely circulated online, tells a more nuanced story—one where a visibly calm woman challenges her elected representative and is dragged out for it in front of a disapproving crowd.

This is not the first time Lawler has faced pushback. In late April, during another town hall in Clarkstown, he struggled to maintain control over a restless crowd of 700 constituents. When he described the country as “strong” and “united,” attendees openly laughed. Multiple audience members were removed during that event as well.

Lawler’s position is growing increasingly precarious. Representing a swing district in New York, he has not yet announced whether he’ll seek re-election in 2026. GOP leadership, according to NBC News, is reportedly urging him not to pursue higher office—specifically a rumored gubernatorial bid—fearing his departure could cost the party a key seat.

The incident also underscores growing tensions nationwide as Republican lawmakers face heightened scrutiny during public appearances. Since Trump’s return to power, many GOP figures have been met with boos, protests, and heckling—leading party leaders in March to recommend avoiding in-person town halls altogether.

I am so glad you are safe right now. Thank you for standing up for democracy.

Feiner, for her part, remains undeterred. Her story has been shared widely on Bluesky, X, and TikTok, becoming a rallying cry for voters demanding accountability and courage from their elected officials.

Whether this moment marks a turning point for Rep. Lawler’s political future remains to be seen—but one thing is clear: his constituents aren’t backing down, and neither is Emily Feiner.
