Nearly two weeks after 20-year-old American college student Sudiksha Konanki vanished without a trace in the Dominican Republic, her devastated family has taken the heartbreaking step of requesting that she be declared dead.
Konanki, a University of Pittsburgh sophomore from Loudoun County, Virginia, was enjoying a spring break trip with friends when she disappeared on March 6. She had been staying at the Riu Republic Resort in Punta Cana, a popular tourist destination, and was last seen around 5:50 a.m. on a beach in the company of another tourist, 23-year-old Joshua Steven Riibe.
What was supposed to be a carefree vacation has now turned into an agonizing international mystery — one that has prompted a massive search effort and sparked countless questions. Despite round-the-clock efforts by authorities from the Dominican Republic, the United States, and even India — where Konanki’s family has roots — no definitive trace of her has been found.
“This is one of the largest operations we have carried out for the rescue of a person,” said Agustín Morillo Rodríguez, general commander of the Dominican Republic Navy, in a statement to CNN. Search teams have scoured beaches, combed the ocean with helicopters and boats, and investigated nearby areas by land. Yet hope is beginning to fade.
Now, the Konanki family has taken the painful step of filing a formal letter with Dominican police on March 17, requesting that authorities issue a declaration of death. The request, submitted after 11 days of exhaustive searching and no signs of life, marks a turning point in the case — one that suggests the family no longer believes Sudiksha will return home alive.
The family’s letter reportedly acknowledges that foul play is not currently suspected. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the young woman’s disappearance remain unclear and continue to stir speculation.
Officials initially suggested Sudiksha may have drowned, pointing to dangerous sea conditions on the morning she went missing. High waves and strong currents reportedly made the beach unsafe, leading many to believe she may have been swept out to sea.
Yet new developments have added layers of complexity to the story.
According to Noticias SIN, the last known image of Konanki is a surveillance photo taken hours before her disappearance. It shows her and Joshua Riibe close together on the beach — a tender moment that has now become a haunting final glimpse.
Riibe has since been identified by local authorities as a “person of interest,” though not a suspect. He is reportedly cooperating with investigators and is currently being interviewed by officers at the Dominican National Police’s Gender Violence Unit.
“Mr. Riibe remains in custody while we gather more information about the incident,” said a police spokesperson last Friday. “At this time, he is not considered a suspect.”
Riibe’s role in the case continues to be the subject of public scrutiny, though both police and the Konanki family appear to believe the situation may have been an accident.

Still, questions linger. How did a young woman vanish from a busy resort with no one seeing or hearing anything? Could more have been done to ensure her safety or expedite the search? And what exactly happened during those final moments on the beach?
Authorities have been careful not to rule anything out entirely. While drowning remains the most likely scenario, the Dominican Republic’s general prosecutor’s office has not closed the door on alternative theories. They are continuing to investigate, including examining the timeline of events, digital footprints, and witness statements.
For now, though, the focus shifts to grieving. Friends and family members have flooded social media with tributes, prayers, and memories of Sudiksha — a bright, ambitious student remembered for her kind heart, quick wit, and love of travel. Vigils have been held in both Pittsburgh and Virginia, with classmates and professors expressing their shock and sorrow.
“She had such a bright future ahead of her,” one friend posted on Facebook. “I still can’t believe she’s gone.”
As the days pass and hope fades, the Konanki family’s request for a declaration of death serves as a grim acknowledgment of reality. It is a final plea for closure in a case that has left a community heartbroken and searching for answers.
Authorities have yet to formally respond to the family’s request, and the investigation remains ongoing. But one thing is certain: the disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki has left an indelible mark — not just on her family and friends, but on everyone following her story.
