FDA Issues Urgent Warning: Costco Eggs Recalled for Salmonella Risk

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class 1 recall, its highest-level warning, for eggs distributed to Costco stores across five southern states due to potential salmonella contamination. The FDA warns that consuming the affected eggs poses a “reasonable possibility” of causing serious health consequences or even death.

Recalled Product Details

The recall involves Handsome Brook Farms Signature Organic Pasture-Raised 24-Count Eggs, which were shipped to Costco locations in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Approximately 10,800 cartons were distributed starting November 22, 2024.

  • Carton identifiers: Numbers 327 and P1363
  • Use-by date: January 5, 2025

While the initial recall was issued on November 27, 2024, the FDA reclassified the situation to a Class 1 alert on December 22, citing increased risks.

Company Response

Handsome Brook Farms explained that the issue arose when eggs not intended for retail were improperly packaged and distributed. In a statement, the company said it is implementing stricter supply chain protocols and retraining staff to prevent similar errors in the future.

Costco has not yet commented on the recall.

Consumer Guidance

The FDA urges anyone who purchased the affected eggs to either return them to Costco for a full refund or dispose of them immediately. Do not consume these eggs under any circumstances.

Understanding the Risks of Salmonella

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), salmonella infections can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Symptoms typically appear six hours to six days after exposure and can last four to seven days. While most cases resolve without medical intervention, young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of severe illness, which may require hospitalization.

What to Do if You Have Symptoms

If you suspect salmonella exposure and develop symptoms, especially severe diarrhea or prolonged illness, the CDC advises seeking medical attention. Those in high-risk groups should be particularly vigilant.
