The rodeo community in Kansas is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Emma C. Brungardt, the 2024 Miss Teen Rodeo Kansas, who tragically passed away on the evening of October 4, 2024, in a single-vehicle accident. Emma, a vibrant 19-year-old and a member of the Colby College Community Rodeo Team, was known for her remarkable talent and dedication to the rodeo lifestyle. Her sudden death has left her teammates, friends, and family in profound grief.
The accident occurred at approximately 9:44 p.m. at a Y intersection on County Road 21 in northwest Kansas. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the vehicle involved, a 2007 Ford F-250 truck, veered off the road between the branches of the Y and crashed into a line of trees before coming to a halt. The truck came to rest upright, facing south, in the tree line. Emma, who was a passenger, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
Five others, including the 18-year-old driver from Flagler, Colorado, were injured in the crash. The other passengers included a 20-year-old woman from Larned, Kansas, a 19-year-old woman from Newton, Kansas, a 19-year-old woman from Galva, Kansas, and an 18-year-old man from Council Grove, Kansas. All were transported to Citizens Medical Center in Colby for medical treatment. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Emma Brungardt hailed from Blue Rapids, Kansas, and was in her sophomore year at Colby College, where she was pursuing a degree in equine management and production. She joined the Colby College Community Rodeo Team on a scholarship, excelling in events such as goat tying, breakaway roping, and team roping. Emma’s passion for rodeo was evident from a young age, and her dedication to the Western lifestyle left a lasting impression on everyone she met.
Her journey as a rodeo competitor began as a first-generation cowgirl, participating in the Kansas Wild Horse Youth Challenge for four consecutive years. Emma’s exceptional talent earned her grand champion titles in 2019 and 2021. She also competed in the Kansas High School Rodeo Association for two years, showcasing her commitment to the sport and her love for the rodeo community.
