Experts Warn Trump Starts Gaslighting Campaign Amid Shocking Betrayal

In a concerning prelude to the 2026 midterm elections, President Donald Trump has signaled that he may not accept the results if they do not favor him, sparking fears among political experts regarding the implications for democratic integrity in the United States.

Amanda Carpenter, an expert on authoritarianism, contends that Trump is laying the groundwork to dispute the election outcomes as part of a broader strategy to undermine democratic processes. Her insights highlight alarming tactics that, according to her, resemble the early stages of authoritarianism.

“All of the helicopters, armed agents, press conferences, and propaganda are pieces of theater with one goal: convincing people that President Trump’s false allegations of widespread voter fraud are true,” Carpenter articulated in a recent commentary for The Bulwark.

Carpenter’s analysis follows a concerning pattern in which Trump has aggressively utilized federal resources to pursue individuals accused of voter fraud. Her organization, Project Democracy, is currently engaged in legal battles to counteract these actions, which many see as an attack on the democratic framework.

During the summer, the Trump administration claimed that 250,000 individuals were illegally registered to vote in several states, including California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Nevada. These accusations, however, were rooted in a flawed system, producing numerous false positives.

Carpenter pointed out that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin’s claim regarding nearly 16,000 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter rolls disintegrated under scrutiny. Rather than reconsider the integrity of its data, the administration has ramped up efforts to arrest purported noncitizen voters and has pressured state officials regarding ballot segregation.

Despite these incendiary claims, the Department of Justice has only charged 156 individuals with voting-related offenses during Trump’s second term, a stark contrast to the administration’s sweeping allegations.

Amidst these developments, prominent legal voices have weighed in on the precarious state of U.S. democracy. Justin Levitt, a law professor at Loyola Law School and former deputy assistant attorney general, revealed that Trump’s strategies for potentially subverting the 2026 midterms are unlikely to succeed.

Levitt remarked, “None of them will work. You’re absolutely right that he will try something, but none of those things will succeed,” affirming his belief in the resilience of democratic mechanisms even against Trump’s attempts.

Dan Vicuña, a voting rights advocate with Common Cause, echoed Levitt’s sentiments, clarifying that Trump’s intentions to influence the election outcomes are evident and deeply troubling.

Vicuña stated, “What they all add up to is a desire to avoid any accountability to the voters in the midterm elections—to ensure, to preordain the outcome of a midterm that he thinks is going to go badly for him.”

He emphasized that Trump’s motives are rooted in self-interest rather than public service, arguing that the former president cares little for societal issues like rising gas prices and economic strife yet remains fixated on maintaining his grip on power.

Experts agree that Trump’s behavior not only destabilizes the political landscape but also demonstrates a profound disregard for democratic principles. Carpenter, Vicuña, Levitt, and others advocate that the nation must remain vigilant as the midterm elections approach.

With the rhetoric of voter fraud reinvigorated by the Trump administration, the stakes have never been higher. The consequences of Trump’s actions are intertwined with the fundamental trust Americans place in their electoral processes.

The unfolding situation raises critical questions: Will Trump’s tactics succeed in undermining the electoral process? And how will voters react in response to attempts to diminish their voice in a democracy?

As the 2026 midterms approach, the political arena will be closely watched. The concern among advocates and legal experts is not only for the outcome of the elections but for the very health of American democracy.

Ultimately, the actions taken in the coming months will define not just the trajectory of the Republican Party but also the strength of democratic values in the United States. The nation stands at a crossroads, with its electoral integrity hanging in the balance.
