Ammon Bundy, a prominent figure within the far-right militia movement, found himself behind bars on Wednesday after a traffic stop in Iron County, Utah, led to his arrest. The incident stemmed from Bundy driving a pickup truck that had been unregistered for over two years.
According to Iron County Sheriff Ken Carpenter, Bundy had already received warnings regarding the lapsed registration. Despite this, he was pulled over by deputies on southbound Interstate 15 in Washington County, where the situation escalated.
When questioned about the truck’s registration status, Bundy directed law enforcement to speak with his attorney, which did not alleviate the deputies’ concerns. As they moved to impound the vehicle for failing to comply with state laws, Bundy allegedly refused to exit the truck.
Lieutenant Shawn Peterson described Bundy’s actions as “passive resistance,” noting that while he did not physically fight back, he also did not comply with the officers’ commands. His booking record reflects multiple charges, including failure to obey an officer, interfering with a peace officer, and driving without valid registration.
Thanks to local business owner Brad Green, Bundy was released shortly after posting bail set at $690. Upon release, Bundy articulated his opposition to vehicle registration and licensing, citing a belief that the right to travel is God-given—a notion frequently espoused by the so-called sovereign citizen movement.
“I disagree with having to have permission to travel,” Bundy stated, emphasizing his ideological stance against state-mandated regulations.
However, the financial cost of his actions didn’t end with the bail. Bundy faced additional charges amounting to $725.75 to retrieve his truck from the DMV impound, along with $410 for towing fees, culminating in a total expense of nearly $1,825.
Following his release, Bundy took to the streets—or rather, the freeway—choosing to walk eight miles along I-15 as a form of protest. His journey was spurred by a deputy’s remark that, lacking valid registration and a license, his only option was to walk.
Despite being informed that pedestrians are prohibited from using no-access freeways except in emergencies, Bundy pressed on, demonstrating his defiance against the authorities.
The arrest marks another chapter in Bundy’s ongoing conflicts with law enforcement. He previously gained notoriety as one of the leaders during the 2016 armed occupation of Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, an event that ended in multiple arrests, though he was acquitted of all charges.
In the years since, Bundy has further distinguished himself as a vocal opponent of COVID-19 lockdowns, aligning with various protests against government mandates. Despite finding common ground with some far-right activists, he has also publicly criticized what he considers excessive force employed by federal agents, notably those from ICE during the Trump administration.
In response to his recent run-in with the law, Bundy has expressed intentions to obtain records related to both this arrest and a previous encounter with police in Parowan, hoping to add more context around his ongoing clashes with authority.
The broad implications of Bundy’s actions extend beyond his immediate situation, reflecting a larger discourse on individual liberties versus state regulations. His statements and protests resonate deeply with segments of the population that feel their rights are compromised.
This latest incident has reignited discussions around the legality of travel restrictions imposed by state laws, particularly within the context of a changing political landscape. Many supporters view Bundy’s defiance as a challenge to governmental overreach.
As Bundy navigates the implications of his arrest, it remains to be seen how this event will influence his activism and interactions with law enforcement in the future.
For now, Bundy continues to assert his belief in an inherent right to travel freely, setting the stage for further confrontations with legal authorities and drawing attention to his cause among supporters and critics alike.
With rallies and speeches on the horizon, Bundy’s next moves will likely be scrutinized, as he remains a controversial figure whose actions reverberate within the circles of militia ideology and anti-government sentiment.
