Local GOP Claims Obligation to Support Republican Facing Child Molestation Charges

The Palm Beach County Republican Party is unwavering in its support for Mike Caruso, the suspended Clerk of Courts who has recently been charged with molestation. In a sharp contrast to the state GOP’s decision to withdraw its support, the county party insists it has a “duty” to continue campaigning for Caruso.

Caruso, who was arrested in August on allegations involving a young relative, remains committed to competing in the upcoming November elections. County GOP Chairman Carl Cascio emphasized in a statement that the local party is following state law and local rules in defending Caruso’s right to seek reelection.

While the state Republican Party has publicly announced its refusal to back Caruso if he remains in the race, the Palm Beach County Republican Party has maintained a different stance. “Mr. Caruso is currently Palm Beach County’s only Republican constitutional officer,” Cascio noted, implying the importance of their support for him during this controversial period.

Despite the governor’s office advising potential replacement candidates in light of his criminal charges, Caruso insists he will not step down. “I maintain my innocence and remain a candidate for Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller,” the 68-year-old declared through a spokesperson, affirming that his name will appear on the ballot this November.

Just a year prior to his arrest, Caruso was appointed by Governor Ron DeSantis, with whom he has a lengthy political alliance. Following his arrest, however, DeSantis immediately suspended him from his duties as Clerk of Courts.

Caruso faces serious charges, including lewd or lascivious molestation, as well as child abuse and kidnapping. These allegations stem from incidents involving a male relative who was under five years old at the time. During an August 28 court hearing, it was revealed that a second individual, a woman, also accused him of molestation, claiming the abuse occurred when she was four.

An Orange County judge released Caruso on a $160,000 bond, citing perceived weaknesses in the state’s case, although prosecutors expressed concerns regarding the judge’s decision.

Though his campaign website has been taken down and he has refunded contributions, Caruso has continued to engage in campaign-related activities. He has kept hiring his son for campaign outreach and hosted two meetings in mid-September at local restaurants in Lake Park.

Palm Beach County is known for its Democratic-leaning population, making Caruso’s path to reelection even more challenging. He is set to compete against Democrat Yvette Drucker, a member of the Boca Raton City Council.

If Caruso manages to secure a victory in November, it raises the question of whether Governor DeSantis would once again suspend him, given the nature of the charges he is facing.

Cascio’s unwavering support highlights the tensions within the Republican Party in Florida, illustrating how local party committees grapple with legal and moral dilemmas surrounding their candidates.

This situation has sparked a significant discourse within political circles regarding accountability, ethics, and party loyalty, especially in the wake of serious allegations against a sitting officeholder.

With the general election rapidly approaching, how the Palm Beach County GOP manages its support for Caruso will be closely observed by both local constituents and the larger political landscape.

The unfolding of this case, particularly as it enters the election season, could have lasting impacts on the dynamics of the Republican Party in the state and its voter base.

As the campaign heats up, many are left wondering how voters will respond to Caruso’s candidacy in light of the allegations and the contrasting responses from the state and county GOP.

Ultimately, this situation serves as a reminder of the delicate balance political organizations must maintain between supporting their candidates and addressing serious allegations that may arise.

As both Caruso and the local Republican Party brace for the political battle ahead, the electorate’s reaction may shape future Republican strategies within Palm Beach County and beyond.
