Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina did not hold back in a recent private message to President Donald Trump, using profanity to assert his independence from any potential primary challenge the former president might suggest.
In a strongly worded message dated June 6, Tillis fired off, “If you had ever threatened me directly with a primary, I would have immediately told you to f—- yourself,” as cited in an image of the exchange shared by Politico.
Tillis’s remarks stem from frustrations regarding his relationship with Trump’s administration, which he expounded upon in his upcoming memoir, How to Lose Friends and Antagonize Presidents, set for release on October 6.
The senator clarified, “Save those threats and head games for cowards and fools,” indicating he perceived Trump’s tactics as manipulative.
This exchange comes in the wake of Trump publicly attacking Tillis during a dispute over the nomination of Todd Blanche for Attorney General. Tillis had expressed he would not endorse Blanche unless he condemned the January 6th Capitol rioters.
In response, Trump called Tillis a “loser” and asserted that the senator’s decision to depart from the Senate was linked to Trump’s alleged refusal to support him.
Contrary to Trump’s claims, Tillis announced in June 2025 that he would not seek reelection after taking a stand against Trump’s extensive tax and spending bill, particularly its provisions concerning Medicaid.
Tillis later explained that he had been leaning towards retirement and that the conflict with Trump merely expedited his decision to announce it.
His assertiveness appears to echo a broader trend among Republican officials stepping back from Trump’s influence, particularly as they approach the end of their legislative tenures.
In a July 2025 interview, Tillis remarked that political pressure stemming from a Trump social media attack was the final straw for him regarding further dealings with the former president.
“If somebody wants to know why I’m not running, it’s because some bonehead told him to post something and pretend like that was going to affect me,” he said, reflecting on the kind of political environment he wishes to escape.
The recent revelations from Tillis highlight a growing divide within the Republican Party, as some members become increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction with Trump’s methods.
While several Republicans have faced the brunt of Trump’s criticisms over the years, Tillis’s candid correspondence sends a message that not all party members are willing to be intimidated.
The unfolding narrative between Tillis and Trump could have future implications for how the GOP navigates primary elections, especially in light of Trump’s considerable sway among the party’s base.
As a retiring senator, Tillis’s willingness to speak out against Trump within this context raises questions about how future political allegiances might evolve.
The tensions revealed in these exchanges illustrate a significant moment in American politics, where longstanding loyalties are being tested by the shifting dynamics under Trump’s presidency.
Whether or not Tillis’s parting words will resonate within the party remains to be seen, but it undoubtedly contributes to the ongoing dialogue about the future direction of the GOP.
With the release of his memoir approaching, it may just be the beginning of further revelations from Tillis about his experiences and encounters during a tumultuous era for the Republican Party.
As the GOP prepares for upcoming elections, the interplay of Trump’s influence and the responses from disenchanted members like Tillis will be pivotal in shaping the political landscape ahead.
