MAGA Senate Candidate Exposed By His Own Flyer Ties To Predator

An election controversy is brewing in North Carolina as Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley finds himself entangled in a public relations debacle over his ties to a convicted sex offender. The situation escalated when leaked audio and campaign materials undermined Whatley’s claims regarding his involvement in a recent campaign event featuring Dr. Mehmet Oz.

Whatley, a former chair of the North Carolina GOP, has been outspoken in his tough-on-crime stance as he vies for the state’s open Senate seat. However, recent revelations have challenged his credibility and campaign messaging.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Whatley, through spokesman DJ Griffin, denied any involvement in planning the event, which featured a prayer from Pastor Daimon L. King, a registered sex offender. King was previously convicted of rape and incest.

However, a virtual flyer obtained by The Daily Beast reveals that Whatley’s campaign was indeed financially linked to the event, contradicting his earlier denial. Furthermore, leaked audio from the event captures Whatley discussing how he had set up the gathering after receiving a call from Oz.

In the audio, Whatley said, “Now I got a good friend who was in North Carolina for just a day, wanted to stop by and say hello. He called up, and he said, ‘Hey, where’s a good place to be?'” His remarks indicate that he was directly involved in coordinating the event.

Documents suggest the event was not only organized by Whatley but was also jointly funded by his Senate campaign and a congressional campaign led by Laurie Buckhout.

This incident marks the second controversy for Whatley related to convicted sex offenders. While serving as state GOP chair, he reportedly elevated Harvey L. West Jr., who had a history of statutory rape involving three teenage girls during his time as a police officer.

West has claimed he was transparent about his past with party leaders, stating, “I openly discussed what happened. I openly discussed my time in prison. I openly discussed the charges.” He suggested that he was fully forthcoming and did not hide his history from the GOP.

Despite these controversies, President Donald Trump has publicly praised Whatley, stating, “He’s fantastic,” and acknowledging him as “one of the best.” This endorsement, however, does not seem to alleviate the pressure mounting against Whatley as he campaigns against former Governor Roy Cooper.

Polling data indicates Whatley is facing an uphill battle, trailing Cooper by 11 points in a recent survey. The revelations about his involvement with convicted sex offenders and subsequent denials have put his campaign’s integrity into question.

Whatley’s situation sheds light on the complexities of political endorsements and candidate associations, particularly within the Republican Party. His close ties to Trump may not be enough to shield him from scrutiny as he attempts to distance himself from the scandals that have emerged.

The fallout from this controversy could have significant implications for Whatley’s campaign strategy moving forward. His ability to project a strong law-and-order image is now compromised, raising doubts among voters about his commitment to public safety.

As the Senate race continues to unfold, the pressure is on for Whatley to address these issues head-on. Failure to do so could jeopardize his aspirations and shape the narrative surrounding his candidacy as the election draws closer.

Political analysts are watching closely, noting that Howley’s situation reflects broader challenges faced by candidates who are linked to controversial figures. The consequences of such associations could ripple throughout his campaign.

Ultimately, the question remains whether Whatley can recover from this scandal and regain the public’s trust. His next moves will likely be scrutinized as voters grapple with the revelations that challenge his tough-on-crime image.

With election day approaching, Whatley’s handling of this situation may be crucial in swaying undecided voters. As the scrutiny increases, only time will tell how this controversy will affect his campaign prospects.
