‘Fresh Prince’ Star Alfonso Ribeiro Faced Every Parent’s Nightmare — His 3-Year-Old Daughter Needed Emergency Surgery Just Hours Before Her Birthday

It was supposed to be a joyful weekend.

Balloons, cake, birthday excitement — the kind of celebration every parent treasures.

Instead, Alfonso Ribeiro and his wife Angela watched their young daughter suffer a frightening accident that sent her into emergency treatment just one day before she turned four.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star later shared the painful images himself.

His daughter Ava Sue could be seen with bruising, abrasions and visible injuries across her face, shoulder and arm after falling from a sit-down scooter.

For Ribeiro, best known to millions as Carlton Banks, it was the kind of moment no parent is ever prepared for.

“Not the kind of day you want the day before turning 4,” he wrote afterward.

Ava’s injuries were serious enough that she underwent an emergency procedure on May 12, 2023, with doctors working to reduce the likelihood of permanent scarring.

Ribeiro praised the medical team at Kare MD Skin Health and focused his message on his daughter’s extraordinary courage.

“So proud of how brave my baby girl was during the surgery,” he wrote.

But one detail made the story even more unsettling.

Earlier that same day, Angela Ribeiro said she had awakened with an intense feeling that something bad might happen.

She later described it as a “vision” or “motherly intuition.”

A man with short dark hair wearing a light purple dress shirt, a patterned blue tie, and a grey suit jacket. He has a green pocket square and is smiling, with a light-colored wooden backdrop.

According to Angela, the feeling was so strong that she gathered the family and others helping prepare for Ava’s birthday party and issued a warning.

“We are not doing anything crazy or dangerous today that could potentially end up with an ER visit,” she recalled telling them.

She even said she made everyone look directly at her while she spoke.

Then the accident happened.

Ava fell from the scooter and suffered what Alfonso later described as severe “road rash” to her face and arm.

What had begun as a normal day of birthday preparations suddenly became a frantic medical emergency.

Angela said Ava was taken to Kare MD Skin Health after hours, where doctors performed a procedure intended to lessen future scarring.

For a child who was still technically three years old, it was an extraordinary ordeal.

Yet her parents repeatedly described her as remarkably strong.

“Not a fun way to spend your last day as a 3-year old,” Angela wrote afterward.

“But she was a trooper.”

She added that the family was giving Ava “extra cuddles” that night.

The images later shared publicly showed why the family had been so shaken.

Ava had wounds around her right eye and visible injuries across her shoulder, elbow and arm.

Ribeiro later appeared on Live With Kelly and Mark and admitted just how difficult the weekend had been.

“It was a very stressful weekend,” he said.

He explained that the injuries involved damaged skin on Ava’s face and arm, requiring doctors to remove affected tissue during treatment.

For parents watching at home, the story was painfully relatable.

Children can go from laughing and playing to needing urgent medical care in a matter of seconds.

But despite everything she had endured, Ava was determined not to let the accident completely destroy her birthday.

The next day, she celebrated turning four.

Ribeiro shared another emotional tribute to his daughter, praising her resilience after what he called a “very difficult week.”

“She’s so brave, strong and creative,” he wrote.

“I love everything about my little girl.”

The medical team also wished Ava a happy birthday and said they were honored to have treated her.

What followed was a recovery process that Ribeiro later suggested could take months.

Fortunately, later updates from the family showed Ava smiling, playing and appearing to heal well.

And that is what makes the story end very differently from how it began.

The photographs of her injuries were alarming.

The emergency procedure was frightening.

Her parents’ fear was unmistakable.

But the little girl at the center of it all refused to let the accident define her.

One day she was undergoing emergency treatment.

The next, she was celebrating her fourth birthday surrounded by the people who loved her most.

For Alfonso Ribeiro, the weekend became a painful reminder that fame offers no protection from the fear every parent understands.

When a child gets hurt, nothing else matters.

Not television.

Not Hollywood.

Not celebrity.

Only one thing matters:

Getting your baby safely home again.
