A morning of event preparations at George Lucas’ legendary Skywalker Ranch descended into chaos Monday when scaffolding and large display screens suddenly collapsed, injuring five men and trapping one worker beneath the wreckage.
The incident unfolded at Summit Skywalker Ranch in Nicasio, an isolated community in California’s Marin County, north of San Francisco.
One of the injured men suffered a head injury and was transported to a hospital in “very serious condition,” according to NBC Bay Area.
Another worker became pinned underneath the fallen LCD screens, forcing emergency personnel to carry out a delicate rescue operation. Crews reportedly used inflatable airbags to raise the heavy structure and free him without causing another collapse.
Three of the five injured men were taken to local hospitals. The conditions of the remaining victims were not immediately disclosed.
Authorities are now investigating what caused the structure to give way.

Emergency Crews Race to Free Trapped Worker
The collapse occurred Monday morning as workers were preparing the property for an event.
Scaffolding and display screens can form large temporary installations, with metal supports, electrical equipment and video panels assembled above or around areas where employees are working.
Something went wrong during that process at Summit Skywalker Ranch, sending part of the installation crashing down.
The impact left debris scattered across the setup area and at least one person trapped beneath the screens.
Rescue teams from the Marin County Fire Department, San Rafael Fire Department and Novato Fire Department all responded to the scene.
Freeing someone from beneath unstable heavy equipment presents a dangerous challenge. Moving one component can cause other sections to shift, potentially placing both the victim and rescuers at further risk.
Emergency crews used airbags to carefully lift the collapsed material. These specialized rescue devices can raise heavy objects incrementally, allowing responders to create enough space to reach someone pinned underneath.
The worker was eventually freed, but the incident left five people injured and one facing what was described as a particularly serious medical emergency.
Officials have not publicly identified any of the victims.
Cause Remains a Mystery
Investigators have not determined why the scaffolding and screens collapsed.
There was no immediate indication whether the incident involved equipment failure, problems with the temporary installation, an environmental factor or another cause. Any conclusion would require an examination of the structure, the setup process and the conditions at the scene.
No allegation of wrongdoing has been made against the ranch, the event’s organizers or any contractor.
The nature of the event being prepared was also not disclosed in the initial reports.
Skywalker Ranch did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to the California Post.
It was not reported whether George Lucas was at the property when the collapse occurred.

Inside the Legendary Skywalker Ranch
The accident’s location is instantly recognizable to generations of film fans, even though the private property is rarely seen by the general public.
Created by the filmmaker behind Star Wars, Skywalker Ranch is not a public theme park or conventional movie studio. The sprawling pastoral estate serves as the home of Skywalker Sound, Lucasfilm’s renowned sound-design, mixing and audio post-production operation.
The facility has helped shape the sound of major motion pictures, transforming dialogue, music and effects into the immersive cinematic experiences heard by audiences around the world.
According to the ranch’s website, Skywalker Sound occupies a 153,000-square-foot Technical Building.
The complex includes a world-class scoring stage, six feature-film mixing stages, 15 sound-design suites and 50 editing rooms. It also contains an automated dialogue replacement stage, two Foley stages and the 300-seat Stag Theater.
The property’s landmarks include the Main House and the appropriately named Lake Ewok—a reference to the forest-dwelling characters introduced in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.
Its tranquil surroundings and association with one of Hollywood’s most influential creative empires have given Skywalker Ranch an almost mythical reputation.
On Monday, however, that peaceful atmosphere was shattered by sirens, emergency vehicles and a frantic effort to rescue workers from beneath twisted equipment.

Questions Await Investigators
The most urgent concern remains the recovery of the injured men, especially the patient reported to have suffered a serious head injury.
Beyond their medical conditions, investigators must reconstruct precisely how the temporary structure was assembled and what happened immediately before it fell.
They may examine the scaffolding, the weight and positioning of the screens, safety procedures and any available witness accounts or surveillance footage.
Until that work is completed, the cause remains unknown.
What began as an ordinary event setup at one of Hollywood’s most celebrated private properties ended with five workers injured, one person trapped beneath a mass of fallen screens and three fire departments converging on the scene.
Behind the cinematic name and peaceful landscape, Skywalker Ranch became the site of a real-life emergency—and one family may now be waiting for answers about how a routine day at work turned so suddenly into disaster.
