The wife of a police officer killed alongside his colleague and five young men in a catastrophic road collision has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the husband, father and friend whose death left “a space that can never be filled.”
Police Constable Matthew Blades, 37, and fellow officer PC Tom Clough, 38, died in northeast England during the early hours of August 22.
The officers were traveling in a marked Cleveland Police vehicle when another car crossed onto the wrong side of a dual carriageway and collided with them at approximately 3:39 a.m.
The five people traveling in the other vehicle also died at the scene.
They were identified as Michael Robert Cahill, 23; Jacob Matusiak, 23; Theo Rae, 17; Cole Robert Worthy, 17; and Makai Saddington, 18.
Seven lives were lost within seconds.
Now, as investigators attempt to reconstruct the events preceding the collision, the officers’ devastated families are describing the men behind the uniforms.
“No Words Will Ever Feel Right”
In a statement released through Cleveland Police, Blades’ wife described him as her beloved husband, best friend and the devoted father of their two young sons.
“No words will ever feel like the right words to honour our Matt,” she wrote.
She remembered him as patient and kind—an adored son and brother, a treasured son-in-law and an uncle who brought laughter and joy to his family.
“He was loved beyond words by all his family and friends, and his loss has left a space that can never be filled,” she said.
For his wife, the tragedy is not only the loss of a police officer who died while working. It is the disappearance of the man who shared her home, raised their children and stood beside her through everyday life.
“He gave his life in the line of duty, protecting and serving others with courage, dedication and selflessness,” she continued.
“The pain of losing him is beyond words, and our lives will never be the same.”
Yet amid the grief, she made a promise concerning the couple’s children.
Their sons, she said, would grow up understanding what an extraordinary father he had been—and would always remain in their lives through the memories and love he left behind.
“Neither will the love he gave us ever fade,” she wrote.
A Second Family Lost Its Hero
Clough’s relatives and partner also released a statement thanking the public for the overwhelming support and condolences they received following his death.
They described the 38-year-old officer as their “hero” and remembered his remarkable sense of humor.
Clough, they said, was someone who immediately stepped forward whenever another person needed help.
He had previously served in the armed forces and was proud of having worked to make the world a better place.
“Always on public duty throughout his short life,” his family said.
The statement painted a picture of a man for whom service was not merely employment. It was a defining part of his character—first in the military and later in policing.
Blades and Clough were reportedly on duty together when their lives ended.
What Happened Before the Collision?
The Independent Office for Police Conduct is examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy because police contact preceded the crash.
According to the IOPC’s initial account, Cleveland Police had received reports of “numerous incidents” involving the other vehicle.
The car was reportedly displaying cloned registration plates, which activated an automatic number plate recognition camera and alerted officers.
Police then pursued the vehicle for less than seven minutes.
Crucially, the pursuit had been abandoned before the fatal collision occurred, according to the information released by investigators.
The vehicle was subsequently seen traveling onto the wrong side of the dual carriageway. Seconds later, it struck the police car containing Blades and Clough.
Everyone involved was pronounced dead at the scene.
The sequence remains subject to an independent investigation, and the available information should not be treated as a final determination of responsibility.
Investigators will examine police decisions, vehicle movements, available camera footage and the precise interval between the pursuit ending and the collision.
A Community Confronts an Unimaginable Loss
The deaths have devastated families on both sides of the collision.
Two police officers were killed while performing their duties. Five other families also lost sons, brothers and loved ones, including two teenagers who were only 17.
The scale of the tragedy has left the wider community searching for answers while formal investigations continue.
For Blades’ wife, however, no official report can restore what was taken.
Her words focused not on the circumstances of the crash but on the man her children will now know partly through stories, photographs and the memories preserved by those who loved him.
“Our children will grow up knowing what an incredible father he was and will always be,” she said.
She vowed to carry his love, his memory and everything they shared with her for the rest of her life.
Behind the statistics are seven individual lives and seven circles of grief.
But one image now stands at the center of the tragedy: two young boys growing up without their father, guided by a mother determined to ensure that they never forget the patient, courageous and deeply loved man he was.
