A Democratic candidate for governor was targeted in a frightening confrontation at an Ohio fair Sunday when an armed man allegedly forced his way through a political tent, knocked people to the ground and lunged toward her before law enforcement intervened.

Amy Acton, 60, was speaking with voters at the Mahoning County Democratic Party’s tent at the Canfield Fair when the encounter suddenly turned violent.

According to Acton’s campaign, the man pushed into the crowded space and moved directly toward the former state health director, injuring several people along the way.

Acton escaped without physical injury, Republican Gov. Mike DeWine later confirmed.

The suspect, identified by authorities as 38-year-old Patrick Havas, was arrested and taken to the Mahoning County Jail. Records cited in reports identified him as a registered Republican.

Local station WFMJ reported that Havas was carrying two firearms at the time of the incident.

Authorities had not publicly established a motive, and political registration alone does not prove that the alleged attack was politically motivated.

Chaos Inside the Democratic Tent

Witnesses and officials at the scene said Havas barged into the Democratic Party’s tent and shoved his way through the crowd.

Two people were reportedly knocked to the ground as he moved toward the front, where Acton was meeting supporters.

A campaign spokesperson said the suspect “lunged at Dr. Acton, injuring multiple people.”

Law-enforcement officers stationed at the fair reacted quickly, preventing him from reaching the candidate and taking him into custody.

“Dr. Acton and Eric are grateful for the swift and decisive action of law enforcement and are praying for the recovery of those injured,” the campaign said, referring to Acton and her husband.

“This kind of violence has no place in Ohio.”

The reported presence of two firearms intensified alarm over what might have happened had police not intervened. Authorities had not said that either weapon was displayed or fired during the confrontation.

Suspect Faces Three Charges

The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office inmate list showed Havas facing two counts of assault and one count of disorderly conduct.

Those charges are accusations, and Havas is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Public records reviewed by The Daily Beast reportedly identify Havas as a licensed nurse and a graduate of Youngstown State University who lives in Canfield.

Investigators are expected to examine why he entered the tent, whether he deliberately targeted Acton and what role—if any—the firearms played in the alleged incident.

Officials had not announced additional charges or disclosed whether the weapons were legally carried.

The distinction will be important as the investigation continues. The campaign described the event as an attack on Acton, while DeWine said the man attempted to forcefully push himself toward her and injured other attendees.

Republican Governor Condemns the Violence

DeWine responded publicly within hours, praising the Ohio State Highway Patrol and other officers who acted at the fair.

“We are grateful for the quick work” of law enforcement, he wrote on X.

The governor said a man had tried to force his way toward Acton while she was speaking and had injured people at the Democratic booth.

“Violence or the threat of violence at political or public events is always unacceptable,” DeWine said. “This case is now in the hands of law enforcement and will be investigated thoroughly.”

His statement confirmed that Acton had not been hurt.

The condemnation was significant in a state where partisan tensions remain intense and where the approaching gubernatorial contest is expected to attract national attention.

Ramaswamy’s Campaign Responds

Acton’s Republican opponent, former Department of Government Efficiency co-chair Vivek Ramaswamy, also denounced the incident.

“Candidates should be able to meet with voters without having to worry about threats or violence,” a spokesperson for his campaign said.

“What happened today is completely unacceptable and has no place in politics.”

The campaign expressed hope that nobody had been seriously injured.

Ramaswamy and Acton are locked in a close race for the governorship. A Fox News poll conducted last month reportedly showed Ramaswamy ahead by only two percentage points.

That narrow margin has placed extraordinary attention on both candidates as they attend fairs, community gatherings and other public events across Ohio.

A Frightening New Campaign Reality

Sunday’s confrontation occurred in northeastern Ohio, an area where Donald Trump and other Republican candidates have drawn strong support.

But officials from both parties moved quickly to reject any attempt to normalize violence around political events.

The Canfield Fair was supposed to provide Acton with a routine opportunity to speak with voters face to face.

Instead, the Democratic tent became the scene of panic as a man allegedly shoved through attendees while carrying two guns.

The incident will likely raise new questions about security for candidates campaigning in open public spaces, where direct access to voters remains politically valuable but increasingly risky.

Acton’s campaign emphasized gratitude rather than retaliation. Its statement praised police, expressed concern for those injured and rejected violence without assigning a motive investigators had not yet established.

For now, Havas remains in custody facing assault and disorderly-conduct charges. Law enforcement must determine what he intended and whether further charges are warranted.

But one fact is already clear: a candidate meeting voters at a family fair was suddenly confronted by an armed man, people were injured, and only a swift police response prevented the encounter from escalating further.
