Shocking Allegations Surface as Feds Investigate Texas Coach for Child Sex Misconduct

A Texas volleyball coach has come under federal investigation for child exploitation after being previously suspended for misconduct involving minors. Ryan Richardson, who has been embroiled in allegations for several years, is now facing scrutiny from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) as concerns mount about his interactions with teenage players.

The investigation follows a revealing report by ProPublica and The Washington Post, which disclosed that Richardson continued to coach despite being deemed “permanently ineligible” by the U.S. Center for SafeSport earlier this year. This ruling came after findings of sexual misconduct and emotional abuse involving a minor were substantiated.

Juan J. Flores Jr., an HSI supervisor specializing in child exploitation within the Rio Grande Valley, confirmed that his agency initiated a probe into Richardson following the ongoing media scrutiny. Flores expressed a commitment to thoroughly investigate all allegations, emphasizing that “every rock” would be turned over in pursuit of the truth.

Richardson was previously suspended in early 2024 by Lone Star Region Volleyball, the governing body for the sport in Texas. At the time, he claimed the complaints against him were part of a campaign to “retaliate and defame” his character, insisting he would never jeopardize the well-being of athletes.

A spokesperson for HSI stated that while the agency is a leader in combating child exploitation, they could not confirm or deny the specifics of the ongoing investigation.

The report highlighted alarming details, including Snapchat messages exchanged between Richardson and a former player, who was 16 at the time. The exchanges contained declarations of love and discussions about their meetings, raising serious concerns about the nature of their relationship.

One particular message from May 2023 read, “I don’t like that we are only sex right now,” indicating a troubling dynamic as the girl turned 17. Such messages contributed to SafeSport’s investigation, which ultimately led to Richardson’s permanent ban.

Adding to the complexity of the case, the mother of the former player, Maggie Gutierrez, described a troubling encounter where she found Richardson alone with her daughter in a dimly lit back room of his gym, which contained a mattress. Despite the circumstances, both Richardson and her daughter denied any inappropriate behavior at that time.

After hearing rumors from her daughter’s college volleyball coach about their alleged relationship, Gutierrez approached local law enforcement in both Pharr and McAllen in early 2024. However, officers declined to pursue the case, citing the daughter’s legal status as an adult.

A police report from McAllen described their interaction with Gutierrez but ultimately closed the case, noting that her daughter had the right to consent as she was 18. This left Gutierrez frustrated and seeking further recourse.

After the police’s inaction, Gutierrez reported her concerns to Lone Star, which escalated the matter to SafeSport. This led to a thorough investigation that corroborated her claims of Richardson’s misconduct.

Last week, Gutierrez met with the HSI investigator, revealing her determination to see the case through. Flores mentioned that the investigation would also assess the responses from the local law enforcement agencies regarding the initial complaints against Richardson.

Authorities from both Pharr and McAllen have not publicly commented on the ongoing investigation or the decisions made regarding the initial police report.

This case highlights a growing concern regarding the safety and protection of young athletes in community sports programs. With Richardson’s coaching career seemingly continuing amid severe allegations, many are questioning the systems in place to safeguard minors.

The developments surrounding Richardson are evolving, with community members advocating for accountability and transparency within sports organizations. The implications of this investigation could resonate deeply, affecting not only Richardson but the broader volleyball community.

As HSI continues its investigation, the potential for further legal action looms large. The ramifications of these findings could set important precedents for how such allegations are handled in the future, particularly at local sports organizations.

This situation remains fluid, and as more details come to light, the response from both local authorities and the sporting community will be critical in shaping the path forward.
