Trumps Crypto Scandal Leaves Investors Reeling With Massive Four Point Seven Billion Loss

A new report from Public Citizen reveals that Donald Trump’s cryptocurrency ventures have resulted in staggering losses for investors, totaling around $4.7 billion. The findings highlight the precarious nature of speculative investments associated with high-profile figures.

The bulk of these losses stem from Trump’s personal meme coin, launched just days before he began his second term as president. Initially valued at over $73 per token, its price has plummeted to around $2, leaving early investors with significant losses.

An astonishing 65% of wallets that invested in the Trump coin are now underwater, accumulating losses estimated at $3.2 billion. Meanwhile, just 1% of investors garnered 80% of the profits during its brief surge.

Despite the turmoil faced by investors, Trump capitalized on the craze, reportedly earning $635 million in licensing fees from the coin last year. Interestingly, he did not personally invest any of his own money, leading Public Citizen to value his holdings at approximately $271 million.

The situation is compounded by other cryptocurrency initiatives linked to Trump. Public Citizen also highlighted governance tokens from World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture co-founded by Trump’s sons, Donald Jr. and Eric Trump.

Governance tokens grant holders certain rights within the associated crypto system. However, Public Citizen likens their ownership to having a say in a condo association without actually owning any property.

These governance tokens peaked at $0.33 in September 2025 but have since dwindled to less than $0.06. While a few early investors profited, most have seen their investments collapse, with cumulative losses around $1 billion.

Furthermore, Trump’s marketing of non-fungible tokens (NFTs), which launched as digital trading cards priced at $99 each, has also drawn scrutiny. Though these cards initially reached a total value of $12.3 million, their current market value is merely $3 million.

This shift reflects a monumental loss for investors, who are now facing a combined deficit of $9.3 million. Nevertheless, Trump reportedly made an additional $7.2 million through royalties and licensing fees from these NFT sales.

The report emphasizes a grim reality that, while investors faced severe financial hardship, Trump’s ventures continued to generate substantial income for him personally.

Zach Everson, the research director for Public Citizen’s Trump Accountability Project, urged caution for those quick to mock the investors. “People decided to put their money into virtual currencies backed by the word of a man who has a complicated history,” he stated in a social media post.

This sentiment reflects a broader concern regarding the risks associated with celebrity-backed investments, especially those in volatile markets like cryptocurrencies.

The report serves as a sobering reminder of the potential pitfalls lurking in the world of cryptocurrency, particularly when tied to high-profile figures such as Trump, who have a history of controversial financial dealings.

As this scenario unfolds, the future remains uncertain for the many investors who hoped to capitalize on Trump’s branding. With regulatory scrutiny increasing, and the cryptocurrency landscape evolving, more challenges may lie ahead.

While investors who backed Trump’s ventures have endured substantial setbacks, the former president has emerged largely unscathed. This juxtaposition raises important questions about accountability and the ethics of promoting such high-risk investments.

As the dust settles, it will be crucial for regulators to assess the implications of celebrity endorsements in the cryptocurrency market. This situation could lead to greater scrutiny of how such products are marketed to everyday investors.

In an industry already marked by volatility and controversy, the outcomes of Trump’s cryptocurrency products may serve as a vital lesson on the risks of investing in highly speculative assets.

Ultimately, while Trump’s ventures have reaped profits for him, many investors now face the harsh reality of their financial decisions—a sobering effect of the intersection between celebrity and cryptocurrency.
