House Democrats are gearing up for a robust series of investigations targeting President Donald Trump and his administration once the midterm elections conclude. With hopes of regaining control of the House, Democratic leaders are preparing to unleash a wave of scrutiny that could include proceedings for impeachment.
As Trump’s approval ratings continue to plummet, Democratic representatives voiced their determination to explore every avenue available to them. Rep. Jamie Raskin from Maryland highlighted what he described as the “fraudulent and vindictive prosecutions” faced by former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James as potential starting points for their investigations.
Leading this ambitious effort are Reps. Robert Garcia (D-CA) and Jamie Raskin, who are both positioned to take significant roles in key committees. Garcia is likely to chair the Oversight Committee, while Raskin could lead the Judiciary Committee. Both are already laying the groundwork for inquiries into numerous controversies surrounding Trump, including his acquisition of a Qatari jet purportedly meant for use as Air Force One, as well as his family’s investments in cryptocurrency.
Garcia openly expressed his interest in involving various Trump associates in the investigations, stating, “Ideally, it’s the president’s sons and the president and the family.” He suggested that testimonies from influential figures like Chief of Staff Susie Wiles and son-in-law Jared Kushner would be necessary.
Raskin acknowledged that no one in the Democratic party is intimidated by the prospect of impeachment, framing it as just one of the tools they might choose to utilize going forward. “I think we’re going to have, in the majority, public Epstein hearings,” he added, hinting at controversial topics that could also draw scrutiny.
Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), a member of the Ways and Means Committee, predicted that if Democrats regain power, the Oversight subpanel will be a highly desirable assignment. He acknowledged ongoing concerns about corruption related to the Trump family, which Raskin humorously noted, saying, “There’s enough Trump family corruption to go around. I don’t think we have to worry about that. We will just be dividing it up.”
In response to these planned investigations, a spokesperson for the White House, Olivia Wales, dismissed the Democratic strategies. She characterized the president’s agenda as a stark contrast to what she described as the radical Democratic platform, accusing them of wanting to significantly raise taxes and being lenient on crime. “The choice has never been more clear: doubling down on President Trump’s winning agenda or far-left liberal policies and partisan gridlock,” she asserted.
As the midterm elections inch closer, it remains to be seen how these investigative plans will unfold and how they will impact the political landscape in Washington—especially if Democrats succeed in flipping the House.
