WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump tried to turn one of journalism’s biggest nights into a public humiliation of CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins.

Instead, his most personal punchline was reportedly met with near-total silence—and an immediate eruption of anger from Collins’ colleagues.

The confrontation unfolded Friday at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, where Collins had just been honored for her reporting under extraordinary deadline pressure.

Roughly 10 minutes into his speech, Trump shifted his attention toward the CNN journalist, whose aggressive questioning has repeatedly made her one of his favorite media targets.

Trump acknowledged Collins as a “young, attractive woman” before criticizing her serious expression and instructing her to smile. He then dismissed CNN as “fake news” and suggested that someone with her prominent position should appear happier.

The moment already carried uncomfortable echoes of Trump’s previous confrontations with female journalists. But the president pushed further.

Trump teased that Collins had secured a major commercial sponsorship. He then delivered a punchline comparing her to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, whose brief Bud Light promotion became the center of a conservative boycott in 2023.

The joke reportedly died in the room.

Rather than laughter, Trump was met with an uneasy silence from an audience filled with reporters, editors and political figures. People reported that the attempted roast produced little reaction.

CNN journalists quickly rallied around their colleague.

“That was an appalling hit at our colleague Kaitlan Collins,” CNN White House producer Betsy Klein wrote.

Chief media analyst Brian Stelter noted that a statement defending Collins was already circulating before Trump had completed his lengthy remarks. To Stelter, the network’s readiness offered a revealing glimpse of the hostile environment journalists now expect when covering the president.

CNN’s Jeff Zeleny highlighted what he viewed as a glaring contradiction: Trump routinely denounces the American press but devotes an extraordinary amount of attention to the reporters covering him.

Despite years of attacks on major news organizations, Trump regularly stops to answer questions, holds lengthy exchanges with correspondents and uses media criticism as a central feature of his political identity.

“For a president who complains so bitterly about the press,” Zeleny argued, no modern president has spent more time talking to reporters.

CNN correspondent Kristen Holmes delivered an even sharper assessment, calling Trump “one of the most unreliable sources at the White House.”

The exchange captured the extraordinary tension surrounding Trump’s first completed appearance at the annual dinner as president. He had skipped the event throughout his first administration.

Friday’s gathering was a scaled-down version of the original April event, which was interrupted by a major security incident. The rescheduled dinner moved to Washington’s Waldorf Astoria and drew approximately 700 guests—far fewer than initially expected.

The smaller audience watched Trump deliver an extended speech filled with complaints, personal attacks and jabs at political opponents. Some lines received restrained laughter. Others landed awkwardly, exposing the tension between the traditional tone of the dinner and Trump’s intensely personal approach to criticism.

The Guardian described the address as a sprawling series of attacks on journalists, public figures and political rivals.

Collins’ award made Trump’s decision to target her particularly striking.

She received the WHCA Award for Excellence in Presidential News Coverage Under Deadline Pressure in the broadcast category. The recognition honored her work surrounding the explosive February 2025 Oval Office confrontation involving Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Trump promptly dismissed the honor as “fake.”

The White House Correspondents’ Association, however, praised Collins for her performance in one of the most difficult reporting environments in American politics. The organization highlighted her composure, command of the briefing room and willingness to ask difficult questions.

The award included a $5,000 prize. The WHCA officially listed Collins as its 2026 broadcast winner.

Trump’s instruction that Collins smile was also not an isolated remark.

For months, he has repeatedly focused on her facial expressions while avoiding or attacking her questions. In June, he claimed she had “hatred in her eyes” and labeled her a “corrupt reporter.”

Collins has continued covering the administration and confronting Trump directly, often refusing to retreat when he interrupts, insults or dismisses her reporting.

That dynamic has transformed their exchanges into a symbol of the wider conflict between Trump and the press.

The White House argues that legacy media organizations approach the president with hostility and distort his record. Journalists counter that Trump frequently attacks reporters personally when they challenge false or misleading claims.

Friday’s dinner placed that bitter relationship on full public display.

Trump entered a celebration dedicated to political journalism, dismissed a prestigious reporting award and attempted to make its recipient the target of a gendered and anti-transgender joke.
