LeBron James has already done nearly everything there is to do in basketball.

After informing the Los Angeles Lakers that he will play elsewhere in the 2026–27 season, James has reportedly narrowed his focus to two teams: the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers. The NBA confirmed that James plans to leave the Lakers after eight seasons, ending a Los Angeles run that included the 2020 championship.
For fans, it is a decision that feels almost impossible to separate from legacy.
Golden State offers one kind of ending: a stunning union with Stephen Curry, the longtime rival who became an Olympic teammate and friend. Cleveland offers another: a homecoming to the franchise where James began his career, returned to win a historic title, and built one of the deepest bonds between a superstar and a city in modern sports.
Warriors insider Nick Friedell reportedly described the situation as essentially a coin flip between Golden State and Cleveland.
“It’s about a 50/50 right now,” Friedell said. “It’s Golden State and Cleveland.”
That possibility has sent the NBA world into a frenzy.
For years, LeBron and Curry represented two competing eras of basketball greatness. Their Finals battles became instant classics, defining a decade of NBA history. They were opponents when it mattered most, leading their franchises into four consecutive NBA Finals from 2015 through 2018.
Now, the prospect of seeing them in the same uniform feels almost unreal.
A LeBron-Curry partnership would give Golden State one final, massive swing at a championship. James would join a franchise already built around Curry, Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr — people he knows well after their time together with Team USA at the Paris Olympics.
Friedell argued that the Warriors could provide the kind of basketball environment James wants at this stage of his career.
“LeBron is looking for basketball happiness at the end,” he said. “There’s no better place to do that than here, flatly.”
Golden State would offer familiarity, elite coaching and a ready-made national spotlight. It would also create one of the most talked-about superteams in recent memory.
But Cleveland is not just another destination.
Cleveland is where the story began.
James entered the league with the Cavaliers in 2003 as the most anticipated young player in NBA history. He carried the weight of a franchise, a city and an entire region on his shoulders before leaving for Miami in 2010.
Then he came back.
And in 2016, he delivered the championship Cleveland had waited generations to see.
That title — won after the Cavaliers erased a 3–1 Finals deficit against the Warriors — remains one of the most dramatic achievements in league history.
