Just after midnight, President Donald Trump launched into a blistering social media tirade that quickly dominated the political conversation, targeting one of his longest-running journalistic adversaries over a newly released book detailing his presidency.
The late-night post, published on Truth Social, was packed with personal insults, sweeping denials, election claims, and an unexpected pivot to Iran—transforming what began as criticism of a book into a sprawling defense of his presidency.
At the center of Trump’s anger was veteran New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman, whose new book, co-authored with fellow journalist Jonathan Swan, has generated intense attention in Washington since its release.
According to Trump, the book is little more than fiction.
“Based on a very quick and boring briefing concerning the Magot Hagerman book about me, it is mostly made up, Fake News, largely fiction,” the president wrote, intentionally misspelling Haberman’s name throughout the post.
Trump accused the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter of publishing inaccurate stories about him for years, repeating familiar complaints about her reporting on elections, investigations into Russia, and other episodes that have defined his political career.
The president also turned the criticism personal.
Calling Haberman a “third rate writer and intellect,” Trump argued that her professional success existed only because of his prominence.
“She has made a first rate income because of your favorite President, ME,” he wrote.
But one particular claim appeared to be the focus of his frustration.
Trump disputed suggestions that the authors possess audio recordings supporting portions of their reporting.
“And they don’t have the audio tapes that they imply they have,” he insisted.
The remark immediately drew attention because reports ahead of the book’s publication had suggested White House officials were concerned about the possibility that recordings from inside highly sensitive government settings—including the White House Situation Room—might have been obtained during the authors’ reporting process.
The book itself has already generated headlines over its behind-the-scenes accounts of internal White House operations and personal details involving senior administration officials.
Trump’s latest response suggested those reports had reached him as well.
As the post continued, however, the president broadened his attack beyond the book itself.
He revisited longstanding claims about the 2020 election, once again asserting that he won all seven swing states, the popular vote, and an overwhelming majority of U.S. counties.
Those claims have been widely disputed, and certified election results found that Trump lost the 2020 presidential election.
Without warning, Trump then shifted topics entirely.
Ending the lengthy message, he declared:
“And Iran will never have a Nuclear Weapon!!!”
The abrupt transition underscored the unpredictable style that has long characterized many of the president’s social media posts.
Rather than remaining focused on a single issue, Trump frequently combines multiple grievances, policy positions, and campaign themes into one extended statement.
Haberman has long occupied a unique place in Trump’s political orbit.
As one of the nation’s most prominent journalists covering the president, she has repeatedly been praised for her access to sources inside Trump’s world while simultaneously becoming one of his most frequent targets.
Their contentious relationship has spanned years, surviving election campaigns, White House battles, criminal investigations, and now another highly anticipated presidential book.
Supporters of Trump have often dismissed Haberman’s reporting as politically motivated.
Her defenders, meanwhile, point to her extensive sourcing and years of reporting on the president as evidence of her credibility.
The latest exchange ensures that debate will continue.
Whether Trump’s criticism slows interest in the book—or instead fuels even greater public curiosity—remains to be seen.
But one thing became clear shortly after midnight.
A single social media post transformed an already high-profile political book into an even bigger national story.
And once again, the battle between Donald Trump and one of his most persistent chroniclers has moved from behind the scenes to the public stage.
