A bitter Republican civil war just took an explosive new turn after Trump-backed congressional candidate Ed Gallrein lashed out at a conservative media outlet that suggested he may have exaggerated his military honors during his campaign.
And the accusations are now shaking one of the most expensive House primaries in American history.
Gallrein — a retired Navy SEAL personally backed by President Donald Trump to defeat Rep. Thomas Massie — erupted after The Daily Caller published a report questioning whether he inflated the number of Bronze Stars he received during his military career.
The controversy centers around a simple but politically dangerous discrepancy.
For years, biographies, public profiles, and media reports reportedly described Gallrein as having received three Bronze Stars.
But during the campaign, new materials suddenly began claiming he had earned four.
That single-number difference has now exploded into a full-blown political scandal.
“This lie-filled story is nothing but a desperate attempt to smear a heavily decorated Navy SEAL,” Gallrein’s campaign fired back furiously in a statement attacking the report.
But critics immediately noticed something important:
The statement attacked the article — without directly denying the underlying allegation.
According to the report, records stretching back more than a decade consistently described Gallrein as a recipient of three Bronze Stars.
That included biographies tied to civic organizations, veterans events, and local news coverage dating back to at least 2011.
Even reports from as recently as 2024 allegedly referenced three Bronze Stars.
Then, suddenly, campaign materials released in late 2025 began claiming Gallrein had received four.
That shift immediately raised eyebrows.
And because military service remains one of the most sensitive issues in American politics — especially inside Republican primaries — the controversy detonated almost instantly.
The timing could hardly be worse for Gallrein.
The Kentucky primary against Massie has already become a national MAGA battlefield fueled by massive outside spending, Trump’s personal involvement, and deep divisions inside the Republican Party.
Trump has poured enormous political capital into defeating Massie after the Kentucky congressman repeatedly defied him — especially by helping push efforts to release Justice Department files tied to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
That move reportedly enraged Trump allies and transformed Massie into one of the former president’s top Republican enemies.
Now Gallrein, the candidate chosen to destroy him politically, suddenly finds himself battling accusations about his own credibility.
Critics say the situation is especially damaging because military records and service claims are treated with extraordinary seriousness by many conservative voters.
Even the appearance of embellishment can become politically toxic.
And the fact that the accusations came not from liberal media — but from a right-wing outlet — only intensified the fallout.
“This is MAGA turning on MAGA,” one political observer wrote online.
Meanwhile, the scale of the race itself continues drawing national attention.
Reports indicate at least $25 million has already flooded into the Kentucky primary, making it one of the most expensive House primary contests ever recorded.
Much of that money has reportedly been spent attacking Massie and boosting Gallrein.
Outside groups connected to pro-Israel organizations have also heavily targeted Massie because of his criticism of Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
Now, with voting approaching, Republicans suddenly face a new crisis inside a race already consumed by chaos, loyalty tests, Epstein battles, and Trump’s relentless political vendettas.
And instead of talking about policy, MAGA world is now arguing over Bronze Stars.
