GOP Senator Erupts at Pete Hegseth as Calls for His Removal Suddenly Explode

A furious Republican senator just unleashed one of the harshest public attacks yet against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth — and the backlash is now spiraling into open calls for his removal.

The stunning revolt came from Senator Thom Tillis, who blasted Hegseth’s recent Pentagon decisions as “amateur hour at best and deadly at worst” in a scorching public statement Saturday.

And inside Republican circles, the political shockwaves were immediate.

Tillis accused Hegseth and his allies of making reckless military decisions that risk weakening America’s global position while disrespecting both U.S. allies and senior military leaders.

“Hegseth continues to surprise and disrespect our greatest allies and some of our best military professionals with impulsive decisions not grounded in reality or good judgment,” Tillis wrote in a lengthy social media post.

The Republican senator specifically targeted reports that the Pentagon is considering downgrading U.S. Army Europe-Africa from a four-star command to a three-star role — a move critics fear could sideline General Chris Donahue, a highly respected combat commander with more than 20 deployments.

Tillis appeared outraged by the possibility.

Calling Donahue “one of our nation’s finest warfighters,” the senator accused Hegseth’s inner circle of trying to force out experienced military leaders in favor of political loyalists.

Then came the line that instantly exploded online.

“Hegseth’s aides are not qualified to carry Donahue’s bag,” Tillis wrote.

He closed the post with a direct warning to the defense secretary:

“Choose meritocracy over your mediocre yes-men.”

The extraordinary public rebuke immediately triggered calls from former military officials and national security figures demanding even more aggressive action.

Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger responded bluntly by reminding Tillis that Republicans had originally voted to confirm Hegseth in the first place.

“You confirmed him. This was completely foreseeable,” Kinzinger wrote.

“That said, keep speaking loudly and get more people to do it. Then ask for his removal.”

Former CIA officer Marc Polymeropoulos echoed the criticism, sarcastically asking:

“Are we forgetting a certain confirmation vote?”

Even former British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace weighed in publicly, warning that pushing aside experienced commanders like Donahue would directly benefit America’s adversaries.

The growing controversy arrives at an especially dangerous moment for the Pentagon.

The United States remains deeply entangled in escalating tensions connected to the Iran conflict, global energy instability, and growing concerns over military readiness abroad.

At the same time, Hegseth has increasingly faced criticism for abrupt staffing changes, loyalty-driven personnel decisions, and clashes with career military officials.

Saturday’s explosion from Tillis marked one of the clearest signs yet that frustration with Hegseth may no longer be confined to Democrats or former officials outside the administration.

Now cracks appear to be opening publicly inside the Republican Party itself.

Online reactions quickly intensified after Tillis’ comments began circulating.

Critics described the senator’s remarks as a stunning public humiliation for Hegseth, while others argued it reflected growing alarm inside Washington over the politicization of military leadership.

Some observers also pointed out the irony of Republicans now publicly attacking a defense secretary many of them previously defended during confirmation battles.

The pressure could become even more intense in the coming weeks if additional Republican lawmakers begin publicly distancing themselves from the Pentagon chief.

For now, however, Tillis’ message was unmistakable:

The internal rebellion against Pete Hegseth is no longer happening quietly behind closed doors.

It’s now erupting directly into public view.
