‘Exceptional’ College Soccer Star Dies After Late-Night Boston Harbor Boat Crash Leaves Community Heartbroken

What began as a night out with friends in Boston ended in unimaginable tragedy.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Dankert — a former college soccer player described by loved ones as “exceptional” — was killed after a recreational boat crashed violently into a pier near Logan International Airport late Wednesday night, according to Massachusetts authorities.

Now, heartbreaking details emerging from the investigation are leaving many stunned, especially after officials revealed the boat had allegedly been taken without permission before the deadly crash.

A Night in Boston Turns Fatal in Seconds

Authorities say the devastating accident happened around 11:30 p.m. in Boston Harbor near pier 4R, just off a runway at Logan International Airport.

According to the Massachusetts State Police, the boat slammed directly into the pier under dark nighttime conditions, triggering a massive emergency response along the rocky shoreline.

When first responders arrived, they encountered chaos.

Boston EMS later described the scene as extremely difficult, with darkness, slippery rocks, and heavily damaged wreckage complicating rescue efforts.

“In difficult conditions, including darkness and slippery shoreline rocks, EMTs located the scene and began patient care,” Boston EMS said in a statement.

Rescuers worked alongside Massport Fire crews to pull four victims from the shoreline after the violent impact.

Lizzie Dankert, just 24 years old, did not survive.

Three others aboard the vessel — including the boat’s driver, identified as 40-year-old Lawrence Shieh — were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Boat Was Allegedly Taken Without Permission

As investigators pieced together what happened, another shocking detail quickly emerged.

According to Freedom Boat Club, the recreational vessel involved in the crash had allegedly been taken without authorization after business hours.

“The vessel involved was taken without authorization and operated outside the knowledge and control of the Club, well after the Club had closed for the day,” the company said in a statement.

The organization added that it is fully cooperating with investigators.

The revelation immediately raised new questions about how the group gained access to the boat and what exactly happened in the moments leading up to the fatal collision.

Investigators have not yet publicly confirmed whether alcohol, speed, or other factors may have contributed to the crash.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office continues to investigate.

Remembered as an ‘Exceptional’ Young Woman

As news of the tragedy spread, emotional tributes began pouring in for Dankert, whose death has deeply shaken friends, classmates, teammates, and the Union College community.

Dankert graduated from Union College in 2024, where she played soccer and built a reputation as both a talented athlete and respected student.

School officials described her loss as devastating.

“Lizzie was an exceptional student-athlete who had a tremendous impact during her four years at Union College,” spokesperson Phillip Wajda said in a statement.

“Her passing is a profound loss for our campus community.”

Friends and supporters flooded social media with photographs, memories, and emotional messages remembering her energy, kindness, and bright future.

For many, the tragedy feels especially painful because it involved someone so young, with so much life still ahead of her.

The Crash Scene Left Responders Stunned

Photos released by Boston EMS showed the mangled remains of the center-console boat resting near the harbor pier after the collision.

The images quickly spread online, shocking viewers with the severity of the destruction.

Emergency crews described carefully navigating unstable rocks and darkness while attempting to reach survivors trapped near the wreckage.

The incident has also renewed conversations about nighttime boating safety, restricted vessel access, and the risks of operating recreational boats in heavily trafficked harbor areas after dark.
