President Donald Trump’s highly promoted “Golden Dome” missile defense system is facing devastating new scrutiny after a congressional report reportedly concluded the project could cost more than $1.2 trillion — while still failing to stop major attacks from America’s biggest enemies.
The staggering findings are already triggering alarm online and fueling accusations that Trump’s futuristic defense vision may become one of the most expensive government projects in modern U.S. history.
Trump previously claimed the “Golden Dome” could be built for roughly $175 billion and marketed the project as an American version of Israel’s famous Iron Dome missile shield — only far larger and more advanced.
But according to a new report from the Congressional Budget Office, the real cost may be nearly seven times higher.
And critics say the system still wouldn’t work the way Trump promises.
The report allegedly warns that the proposed defense network would not be capable of fully stopping large-scale missile attacks launched by nuclear powers such as China or Russia.
That revelation alone sent shockwaves through political and defense circles.
At the center of the proposal is a massive “space layer” involving roughly 7,800 satellites designed to intercept incoming intercontinental ballistic missiles before they reach American soil.
But the technology comes with enormous complications.
According to the report, those satellites would constantly burn out and require replacement every five years, forcing the United States to maintain nearly 30,000 satellites over a twenty-year period just to keep the system operational.
And even then, analysts reportedly warned the entire shield could still be overwhelmed during a full-scale military strike.
The report also suggested the project could unintentionally trigger a dangerous new arms race, encouraging rival nations to expand their missile stockpiles even further in response to the system.
Critics online immediately compared the proposal to science-fiction-style military fantasies with impossible price tags.
Others questioned how Republicans could justify spending over a trillion dollars on an uncertain defense system while simultaneously warning about federal debt and government spending.
The controversy arrives during growing global instability tied to the Iran war, worsening tensions with China, and rising fears over military escalation worldwide.
Trump has repeatedly pushed the “Golden Dome” concept as proof America can dominate future warfare through advanced technology and space-based defense systems.
But the new findings appear to undercut many of those promises.
Especially the claim that America could build an impenetrable shield against modern missile attacks.
Now critics are warning the project risks becoming one of the most expensive and controversial defense proposals ever attempted.
And for many observers, the biggest shock may not be the trillion-dollar price tag.
It’s the possibility that after all that spending… America still wouldn’t be fully protected.
