Eight Children Killed in Louisiana Domestic Shooting as Community Reels in Shock

A quiet Sunday morning in Shreveport turned into one of the darkest tragedies in the city’s history, as eight young children lost their lives in a devastating act of domestic violence that has left an entire community in mourning.

Authorities say the suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, a 31-year-old Army veteran, carried out a series of shootings across multiple homes early on April 19. The victims—ranging in age from just 3 to 11 years old—were all closely related to him, including seven of his own children and one niece or nephew.

According to investigators, the violence unfolded shortly after a domestic dispute between Elkins and his wife. What began as an argument escalated into a tragedy that would claim the lives of eight children, most of whom were reportedly asleep when the attack occurred.

Officials later confirmed the identities of the victims: Jayla Elkins, 3; Shayla Elkins, 5; Kayla Pugh, 6; Layla Pugh, 7; Markaydon Pugh, 10; Sariahh Snow, 11; Khedarrion Snow, 6; and Braylon Snow, 5. Family members described them as joyful, kind-hearted children whose lives were cut short in an unimaginable way.

Police responding to the scene described it as one of the most distressing incidents they had ever encountered. The violence spanned three separate locations, with the majority of the victims found inside a single home. One child was discovered outside after apparently trying to escape.

Two adult women—believed to be the mothers of the children—were also seriously injured during the attack. One was identified as Elkins’ wife, while the other was reported to be his partner. Both remain in critical condition as of the latest updates.

After the shootings, Elkins fled the area, allegedly carjacking a vehicle in an attempt to escape. A police pursuit followed into a nearby area, where officers ultimately shot and killed him, bringing the immediate threat to an end.

What has further shaken the public is the chilling contrast between the violence and Elkins’ social media activity just hours before. The night before the attack, he had posted a photo spending time with one of his daughters, describing it as a “1 on 1 date.” Earlier in the month, he shared an image of himself with his children at church, calling it his first time attending with all of them together.

Family members revealed that Elkins and his wife were in the middle of separation proceedings and were expected to appear in court the following day. The argument that preceded the attack is believed to have been tied to their deteriorating relationship.

Local officials have called the incident one of the worst tragedies in Shreveport’s history. Community leaders, law enforcement, and residents alike have expressed deep sorrow and disbelief, as the city grapples with the scale of the loss.

In the aftermath, investigators continue to piece together the full timeline and motive behind the attack. Authorities have also urged anyone with additional information to come forward as they work to understand how such a devastating act could unfold.

As the investigation continues, the focus has shifted to the victims—the eight children whose lives ended far too soon. Vigils and memorials are expected to take place in the coming days, as families and neighbors come together to grieve and remember.

The tragedy has once again sparked broader conversations about domestic violence, mental health, and the warning signs that can precede such acts. For now, however, a community remains united in grief, struggling to make sense of a loss that words can scarcely capture.
