For decades, she chose silence. Now, that silence is over.
In a stunning public statement that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood and political history circles alike, actress Daryl Hannah has finally spoken openly about her long-rumored relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. — and she is furious.
Writing in a blistering essay for The New York Times, Hannah condemned the new television series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, calling its portrayal of her “appalling,” deeply inaccurate, and personally damaging.
The essay marks the first time the 65-year-old actress has publicly addressed her relationship with the son of President John F. Kennedy — a romance that fascinated the public in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
But according to Hannah, the new television dramatization has crossed a line.
A Fictional Version of Her Life
The limited series, created by Ryan Murphy, depicts the complicated romantic history between Kennedy and Hannah before he ultimately fell in love with and married Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy.
In the show, actress Dree Hemingway portrays Hannah as a volatile and emotionally demanding partner whose relationship with Kennedy deteriorates dramatically.
But Hannah says the character bears little resemblance to reality.
“The character ‘Daryl Hannah’ portrayed in the series is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John,” she wrote in the essay.
Her frustration is not simply about artistic interpretation. According to Hannah, the show presents specific actions and behaviors that she insists never happened.
“The choice to present her as irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate was no accident,” she wrote.

“These Are False Assertions”
The actress went further, directly addressing several of the most controversial scenes in the series.
One particularly shocking moment in the show depicts a cocaine-fueled party involving Hannah and her friends, where the drug is placed on a treasured Kennedy family heirloom.
Hannah categorically rejected the portrayal.
“I have never used cocaine in my life or hosted cocaine-fueled parties,” she wrote.
She also denied multiple other dramatic plot points depicted in the series, including allegations that she pressured Kennedy into marriage, planted stories in the press, or behaved disrespectfully toward members of the Kennedy family.
“I have never desecrated any family heirloom or intruded upon anyone’s private memorial,” she said.
The actress expressed particular outrage at a scene implying she compared the death of Kennedy’s mother, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, to the loss of a pet.
“That claim is absurd,” Hannah wrote, adding that the series forces her to defend herself against “assertions about conduct — and they are false.”
A Relationship That Captivated the Public
The romance between Hannah and Kennedy had long fascinated the media.
The two first met in the early 1980s while vacationing on the Caribbean island of St. Martin with their families. Years later, they reconnected at a family wedding and began dating.
Their relationship lasted more than five years, often described as passionate but unpredictable.
In the early 1990s, rumors swirled that marriage might be imminent. But the couple ultimately ended their relationship in 1994.
Two years later, Kennedy married Carolyn Bessette in a famously secret ceremony attended by only 40 guests on Cumberland Island, Georgia.
The wedding marked the beginning of one of America’s most photographed celebrity couples.

Why She Stayed Silent
For Hannah, the public fascination surrounding the Kennedy relationship was overwhelming.
In a 1993 interview with Entertainment Weekly, she joked about how relentless the questions had become.
“I call my plumber, and even he asks about it,” she said at the time. “Why can’t people talk about something else?”
Over the years, Hannah chose to keep her private life out of the spotlight, focusing instead on her acting career and environmental activism.
In 2018, she married legendary musician Neil Young.
But the new television series, she says, pushed her to finally speak.
“I’ve endured outrageous lies, crappy stories and unflattering characterizations before,” she wrote. “I chose not to battle them.”
However, she emphasized that silence should not be interpreted as acceptance of false narratives.
“My silence should not be mistaken for agreement with lies.”

A Debate Over Fact and Fiction
Hannah’s essay has reignited a broader debate in Hollywood about how far television dramatizations can go when portraying real people.
Producers often defend such projects as creative interpretations rather than documentaries. But critics argue that viewers frequently accept these portrayals as historical truth.
When contacted for comment about Hannah’s essay, representatives for Ryan Murphy did not immediately respond.
For now, Hannah’s powerful rebuttal has ensured that the conversation around the Kennedy love triangle will continue.
Decades after the relationship ended, the story of John F. Kennedy Jr., Daryl Hannah, and Carolyn Bessette remains one of the most captivating — and controversial — romances in modern American celebrity history.
But this time, Hannah is making sure her version of the story is finally heard.
