White House Rocked by ICE Arrest of Press Secretary’s Family Member — The Shocking Story Behind the ‘Criminal Illegal Alien’ Label

Mother of White House Press Secretary’s Nephew Arrested by ICE, Sparks Fierce National Debate

A Massachusetts woman with deep personal ties to the White House has become the center of a national controversy after immigration officers detained her earlier this month. Bruna Caroline Ferreira, a Brazilian-born mother of an 11-year-old boy, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Revere, Massachusetts — igniting fierce political debate, conflicting narratives, and widespread scrutiny of the Trump administration’s intensified deportation campaign.

Ferreira, who shares a son with Michael Leavitt, the older brother of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, has been labeled by the Department of Homeland Security as a “criminal illegal alien.” According to DHS, Ferreira overstayed her tourist visa after entering the United States on a B2 visa in 1998, which required her to leave the country by June 6, 1999.

A DHS spokesperson told NBC News Ferreira previously faced an arrest on suspicion of battery — though the outcome of that case remains unclear, and the New York Post could not independently confirm the charge. DHS did not respond to a request for additional comment.

Arrest During a Routine Drive

Ferreira’s attorney, Todd Pomerleau, said she was arrested while driving to pick up her son in New Hampshire, where the boy lives with his father. The arrest happened abruptly, Pomerleau said, and left the child without contact with his mother in the days leading up to Thanksgiving.

ICE later transferred Ferreira to the South Louisiana ICE Processing Center, where she now awaits removal proceedings. Under President Trump and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, all undocumented immigrants — regardless of criminal history — are considered priorities for deportation.

Conflicting Narratives: “Criminal Illegal Alien” or “Model Resident”?

Ferreira’s attorney strongly disputes the DHS characterization, insisting that his client has no criminal record and has lived in the United States since childhood.

Pomerleau claims Ferreira arrived under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) framework and has maintained legal status since then. He said she was actively working toward securing a green card before ICE detained her.

“She followed every requirement, lived an honest life, and was abruptly arrested and taken from her young child right before Thanksgiving,” the attorney said.
“She should not be sitting in a jail hours away from her family.”

Family members and supporters echoed this sentiment, with a relative creating a GoFundMe campaign describing Ferreira as someone who came to the United States as a child in 1998 and had “done everything in her power to build a stable, honest life here.”

White House Attempts to Distance Itself

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who became the youngest person ever to hold the position at age 28, reportedly has no relationship with Ferreira. According to WMUR, the two women have not spoken in years, and Leavitt has avoided publicly addressing the matter.

Michael Leavitt, who has full custody of their son, said that while Ferreira has maintained a relationship with the boy, he has been the child’s primary caretaker since birth.

“The only concern has always been the safety, well-being, and privacy of my son,” he said.

A Family Story Under the National Spotlight

Ferreira and Michael Leavitt were previously engaged and even shared a brief moment of public attention in 2014, when Leavitt won $1 million in a DraftKings fantasy football contest. At the time, the couple was photographed with an oversized novelty check, smiling as new parents of an eight-month-old son.

Ferreira told a local newspaper then:
“We don’t really need much. We are blessed.”

That image now stands in stark contrast to her current reality: detained, isolated, and uncertain of her future.

A Flashpoint in Trump’s “Mass Deportation” Agenda

The arrest comes as the Trump administration intensifies its promised mass deportation campaign, which includes:

  • large-scale ICE raids
  • expanded use of National Guard support
  • pressure on undocumented immigrants to “self-deport”
  • dramatically broadened removal priorities

Civil rights groups warn that Ferreira’s case could foreshadow broader detentions of individuals who previously lived under DACA protections.

A Child Caught in the Middle

Ferreira’s son has not spoken to his mother since her arrest.
Pomerleau says the boy is distressed and confused, unsure when — or if — he will see her again.

“His mother is locked up in Louisiana, where she should never have been in the first place,” the attorney said.

As removal proceedings move forward, Ferreira’s future remains uncertain. What is clear, however, is that her detention places the White House itself in the uncomfortable center of a politically explosive immigration story — one that touches the president’s press secretary, her family, and the national debate over who deserves to stay in America.
