She Came Out… But It Was Her Mother’s Reaction That Shocked Everyone

When Emily Estefan came out to her parents, Gloria and Emilio Estefan, in 2017, the moment was filled with love, honesty, and a conversation that Gloria says she will never forget. Now, years later, the legendary Cuban-American singer is sharing new details about that deeply personal talk — revealing how she balanced being a mother, a mentor, and a veteran in the music industry during one of the most vulnerable moments of her daughter’s life.

The story, told in this week’s issue of PEOPLE, is a reminder of why the Estefan family remains one of music’s strongest and most united households.

A Mother’s Memory — “Are You 100% Sure?”

Gloria Estefan, 67, remembers the day her daughter sat down to share her truth. Emily, now 30, was preparing to release her debut album at the time, and the timing created a complex emotional crossroads.

“I think she got a little confused,” Gloria recalls, “because at the time she came out to me, she was about to release her album.”

As both a mother and a music industry veteran, Gloria felt a responsibility to guide her daughter in a real and honest way — but also to protect her.

“And I told her, ‘Listen, are you 100% sure this is how you feel? I’ll get on that parade float with you. But in the meantime, why don’t you release your music without any labels at all?’”

Her intention wasn’t to silence her daughter. It was to shield her from the inevitable scrutiny that labels attract, especially in the public eye.

“I was trying to be both mom and give her advice on the music side,” she explains.

“People Are Going to Label You — Be Ready”

While Emily found acceptance at home, Gloria wanted her to understand the world wouldn’t always be as gentle.

“I don’t like labels,” Gloria says. “But I told her, ‘People are going to label you. You have to be ready for that, because it’s not going to be easy. And I will be by your side, 100%.’”

For Gloria, who was raised Catholic but has long believed that nobody should be told “who they have to love,” the conversation wasn’t about changing anything — only about preparing her daughter for the pressures of fame.

After that talk, Gloria never saw her daughter any differently.

“She’s Emily,” she says simply. “And that was always the case.”

Love, Music, and an Ever-Growing Family

Since coming out, Emily Estefan has continued building a successful artistic career — composing, producing, and most recently working on the soundtrack for the upcoming musical Basura, a project she is collaborating on with her mother.

In November 2024, Emily celebrated her eight-year anniversary with her girlfriend, Gemeny Hernandez, sharing a heartfelt message on Instagram:

“Love is growing up. Love is watching the pigment in your hair fade, the wrinkles on your face form, the softness in your voice amplify. Almost 8 years beautiful. Te Amo 🌹.”

Today, the Estefan family remains tighter than ever. Gloria and Emilio, along with their children Emily and Nayib, and grandson Sasha, continue to support one another publicly and privately — showing the world what a longstanding, loving family looks like in the spotlight.

Coming Full Circle — Filming “La Vecina (No Sé Na’)”

Just weeks before releasing her new studio album Raíces, Gloria filmed the music video for “La Vecina (No Sé Na’)” at a location with deep emotional roots: the very place in Miami where she and her mother lived after immigrating from Cuba in 1959.

For the shoot, Gloria surrounded herself with the people who mean the most to her — her family.

“It’s like, ‘No matter how far you get in life, you’re always that person — that little girl, that dreamer,’” she shares. “To go back to where I started, but now with this beautiful family and this career that has been a blessing, it means everything.”
