Newly unsealed federal court documents have shed additional light on the allegations that derailed former congressman Matt Gaetz’s political rise, revealing circumstances that the accuser’s attorney says made the case particularly troubling — and raising fresh questions about how the situation was handled behind the scenes.
Gaetz, once considered a rising Republican star, withdrew from consideration to become Donald Trump’s attorney general last year after reports emerged that investigators were reviewing his past conduct and possible involvement in activities connected to his close associate, former Florida official Joel Greenberg.
For years, most details remained sealed under federal court protection. But a lawsuit filed by the McClatchy news chain to unseal records was upheld by a federal judge, making hundreds of pages newly available to the public.
A Vulnerable Teen, According to Her Attorney
The accuser’s attorney, Laura B. Wolf, said in an interview that her client was a minor at the time of the alleged interactions and described her as facing significant personal instability. Wolf said the teen had part-time work, was struggling financially, and was dealing with intermittent homelessness.
Wolf emphasized that the environment surrounding the girl at the time made her “particularly vulnerable,” adding that the newly unsealed documents helped clarify why the case had drawn such serious attention from investigators.
The documents do not include charges against Gaetz himself, and he has maintained that the allegations are entirely untrue.
Greenberg at the Center
Much of the material connects back to Joel Greenberg, the former Seminole County tax collector who pleaded guilty in 2021 to multiple felony counts unrelated to Gaetz, including fraud and misuse of public office. Greenberg is currently serving an 11-year federal sentence.
Investigators previously examined whether Greenberg introduced the minor to others in political and social circles. According to the unsealed documents, Greenberg had been in contact with the teen and facilitated several meetings between her and individuals he knew.
Gaetz’s name appeared in some documents during the investigation, which immediately drew national scrutiny due to his political prominence. However, Gaetz was never charged, and the Justice Department quietly ended its criminal inquiry into him in early 2023.
Political Consequences and Fallout
Even without criminal charges, the political fallout was swift and dramatic.
Gaetz’s initial nomination to serve as attorney general in Trump’s second administration sparked bipartisan backlash, with lawmakers in both parties privately expressing deep concern over past allegations raised in media reports.
Within weeks, Gaetz announced that he would remove himself from consideration, citing the “media circus” and the need to “protect the administration’s agenda.” Trump later selected Pam Bondi for the position.
Gaetz subsequently resigned from Congress in late 2024.
Shortly afterward, the House Ethics Committee—conducting its own internal review—released a report stating that there were “unresolved matters” surrounding Gaetz’s past associations and conduct, even after the DOJ declined prosecution. Committee investigators did not accuse Gaetz of crimes but said his judgment had raised “serious concerns.”
Gaetz Responds
Gaetz has rejected all allegations and criticized both the media and political opponents for “weaponizing innuendo.” In a message shared with national outlets, he insisted:
“These claims are false and have been disproven. They were used to damage me politically and nothing more.”
The accuser has never spoken publicly about the matter.

The newly unsealed documents do not reopen the criminal case, and legal experts say they are unlikely to lead to new charges. Instead, they provide additional context to one of the most politically explosive scandals of the past five years.

As for Gaetz, he has since taken a job as a commentator for a conservative media network and has insisted he is ready to rebuild his public image.
But with newly released records continuing to raise questions, the political chapter he once dominated may be far from over.
