Marco Rubio’s Awkward Encounter With a Rock Legend Takes an Unexpected Turn
During Donald Trump’s state visit to the U.K. this fall, Secretary of State Marco Rubio found himself in one of the strangest diplomatic situations imaginable — face-to-face with Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger.
Speaking at a Washington reception Monday night for newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, Rubio recounted the bizarre encounter that left him both nervous and starstruck.
It all started, Rubio said, during a quiet dinner in London with Gor and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. That calm shattered the moment an 82-year-old Jagger strolled into the restaurant and sat down two tables away.
“Sergio’s like, ‘I’m going to go up to him. I’m going to get his picture,’” Rubio told the crowd, according to CBS News. “I go, ‘Don’t go up to him. He’s not like an enormous fan of the president… We’re in the guy’s country. He’s a legend here. I don’t know how he’s going to react.’”
Rubio admitted he was wary of any potential diplomatic embarrassment — not least because Jagger has a long history of criticizing Trump, from environmental rollbacks to the use of Rolling Stones songs at MAGA rallies.
Still, Gor wasn’t deterred.
“I told him, ‘OK, whatever you do, don’t mention me,’” Rubio said, laughing. “He doesn’t even know who I am. And if he does, it’s not because he likes me.”
Moments later, Rubio watched in horror as Gor struck up a chat with the rock icon — and promptly blew his cover.
“All of a sudden I hear Sergio say, ‘Marco Rubio would love to meet you. He’s sitting right over there.’”
Rubio was hesitant to meet the British rock icon—especially in his home country.
🎤 “Couldn’t Have Been Nicer”
Expecting the worst, Rubio braced himself. Instead, to his surprise, Jagger was gracious and friendly.
“He couldn’t have been nicer,” Rubio said. “Just a total gentleman.”
The brief encounter — lighthearted and entirely unexpected — ended up being one of Rubio’s more memorable moments on the overseas trip.
“What I learned from that,” Rubio joked, “is that Sergio is going to be a good ambassador.”
Indeed, Gor — a longtime Trump insider and former head of the White House personnel office — has now been confirmed as U.S. ambassador to India, officially sworn in Monday by Vice President JD Vance.
Gor, the former director of the White House personnel office, was confirmed by the Senate in October and sworn in by Vice President JD Vance on Monday.
🌍 The Rockstar and the Politician
For Jagger, who’s been openly critical of Trump’s politics, the moment likely carried its own irony. In past interviews, he’s condemned the administration’s stance on climate change and even mocked Trump’s “11,000 votes” remark from the infamous 2021 Georgia phone call.
“We wanted to play ‘Wild Horses,’” Jagger joked to a Georgia crowd last year. “All we needed was 11,000 more votes.”
Still, his exchange with Rubio — one of Trump’s highest-ranking diplomats — showed that rock royalty and political power can coexist, at least for one polite London evening.
🎸 A Lesson in Caution — and Charm
For Rubio, the episode served as a rare lighthearted break in an administration often defined by confrontation.
He may have started the night fearing a clash with a rock legend — but ended it humbled, relieved, and just a little starstruck.
In the end, Mick Jagger didn’t just “start him up.” He reminded him that sometimes, diplomacy begins with a smile and a handshake — even across a generation, and a worldview, apart.
