Panicked Trump Explodes at Supreme Court as His Own Justices Turn on Him
President Donald Trump launched into an all-caps tirade early Sunday morning after two of his own Supreme Court appointees, Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, openly questioned the legality of his sweeping tariffs — a cornerstone of his second-term economic agenda.
The 79-year-old president, who has grown increasingly volatile amid a string of legal, political, and economic crises, appeared stunned that the Supreme Court — once his proudest political achievement — might now be the institution that unravels one of his signature policies.
“WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?” Trump screamed on Truth Social at 6:41 AM.
“The whole thing is ridiculous! Other Countries can Tariff us, but we can’t Tariff them??? Businesses are pouring into the USA ONLY BECAUSE OF TARIFFS. HAS THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT NOT BEEN TOLD THIS???”
He continued:
“That is NOT what our great Founders had in mind! It is their DREAM!!! WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???”
The Case That Shook Trump’s Empire
At the heart of the controversy is whether Trump had the constitutional authority to impose hundreds of billions of dollars in tariffs on trading partners — without congressional approval — under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
When Trump declared the country’s trade deficit an “economic emergency” in 2024, he used the IEEPA to bypass Congress and slap tariffs on dozens of nations, claiming it would restore American jobs. Critics — and now the Court — are questioning whether that move was ever legal.
Justice Neil Gorsuch, one of Trump’s first Supreme Court appointees, warned during Wednesday’s oral arguments that Trump’s logic could set a dangerous precedent.
The president vented his frustration at the Supreme Court Sunday morning.
“It’s a one-way ratchet toward the gradual but continual accretion of power in the executive branch,” Gorsuch said. “And away from the people’s elected representatives.”
Justice Amy Coney Barrett was equally skeptical, grilling Solicitor General D. John Sauer — Trump’s former personal lawyer, now representing the administration — for legal precedent justifying the tariffs.
“Can you name a single case,” Barrett asked pointedly, “where a president has unilaterally imposed this kind of tax on commerce without congressional consent?”
Sauer struggled to answer.
If the Court rules against Trump, the government could be forced to refund up to $90 billion in collected tariff revenue, dealing a catastrophic financial and political blow to an administration already buckling under a government shutdown.
A President Betrayed by His Own Bench
Trump’s fury is fueled not only by the potential financial fallout, but by the perceived betrayal of his own handpicked justices — Gorsuch, Barrett, and Brett Kavanaugh — whom he has repeatedly referred to as his “legacy.”
“I gave them everything!” one Trump adviser quoted him as saying privately on Sunday morning. “And this is how they repay me?”
According to a senior White House aide, Trump spent the early hours glued to cable news coverage of the hearing before taking to Truth Social to vent his rage.
He also accused the Court of “disrespecting presidential authority” and hinted that Congress should move to limit judicial power — a move that legal scholars say would trigger a constitutional crisis.
“It’s clear he’s spiraling,” said former DOJ official David Laufman. “He’s seeing even his allies beginning to pull away.”

Trump’s tantrum didn’t stop with the Supreme Court. Barely an hour later, he posted a second rant demanding that Republican senators eliminate the filibuster — the only procedural barrier stopping the GOP from unilaterally passing his budget to reopen the government.
“Republicans Should Terminate the Filibuster (THE DEMS WILL DO IT THE FIRST CHANCE THEY GET!),” he wrote. “End the Shutdown, Pass lots of Great ‘Things,’ and Win the Midterms. SO EASY TO DO — Be the Smart Party, Not the Stupid Party!”
The 7AM post left aides scrambling as Senate leaders — already divided over how to end the shutdown — avoided questions about the president’s “suggestion.”
“It’s total chaos,” one senior Republican said. “He’s turning his frustration with the Court into a purge against his own party.”
A Shaken Foundation
Legal experts say the case, and the president’s meltdown, reflect an unprecedented collision between executive ambition and constitutional restraint.
Trump’s use of the IEEPA was already controversial, as the law was designed for emergencies like war or terrorism — not trade deficits.
“He’s weaponized a Cold War-era law to bypass Congress,” constitutional lawyer Kim Wehle told MSNBC. “Now the very justices he appointed are reminding him that even presidents have limits.”
Behind the scenes, aides worry that a Supreme Court ruling against Trump could trigger a new wave of attacks on the judiciary, similar to his 2020 post-election assault on the courts.
“He sees every check on his power as betrayal,” said one former West Wing staffer. “This won’t be the last all-caps tantrum.”

The Unraveling Legacy
For Trump, the irony is cruel. The same conservative court he built to secure his legacy may now be the one to dismantle it — piece by piece.

“The Court is supposed to be loyal!” Trump fumed privately, according to an aide. “They forgot who put them there.”
As dawn broke over Washington, Trump’s Truth Social feed remained a digital battlefield of rage and defiance.
One post summed it up best:
“They’re turning on me — but I’ll win anyway. WATCH.”
The problem, say observers, is that for the first time in his presidency, even his own court may not be watching the way he wants.
