Kentucky Cheerleader Accused of Hiding Newborn in Closet After Birth, Going to McDonald’s

What began as an ordinary morning for roommates in an off-campus Kentucky home turned into a horrifying discovery that has left a community shaken and a young woman facing serious criminal charges.

According to police affidavits, University of Kentucky cheerleader Laken Snelling, 21, secretly gave birth in her bedroom in the early hours of August 27. Hours later, she allegedly hid the infant in a trash bag inside her closet—then ordered McDonald’s before returning home, where police had already found the newborn’s body.

A Grim Discovery

Authorities say Snelling’s roommates first became suspicious after noticing a blood-soaked towel on the bedroom floor. They contacted police, who arrived at the Lexington home to find a trash bag hidden in a closet. Inside was the body of a newborn baby wrapped in a towel, along with a zip-lock bag containing a placenta.

Snelling returned to the house shortly after police made the discovery and was immediately taken into custody. She was later transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital for medical treatment, where she waived her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with detectives.

Snelling’s Account

According to affidavits obtained by PEOPLE, Snelling told police that she gave birth around 4 a.m. on August 27. She said the baby “fell onto the floor of her bedroom.” Exhausted, she stayed awake for half an hour before “falling on top of the baby and going back to sleep.”

When she awoke, she told officers, the newborn was “turning blue and purple.” Snelling claimed she wrapped the baby in a towel “like a burrito” and lay next to it on the floor for comfort. Then she went back to sleep until her alarm rang at 7:30 a.m.

When she woke again, she allegedly cleaned up the blood and afterbirth, placed the newborn and placenta into a trash bag, and stashed it in her closet.

A Trip to McDonald’s

Rather than alert authorities, Snelling said she tried to carry on with her day. She initially left home intending to go to class, but told police she “wasn’t feeling well.”

Instead, she parked her car, skipped class, and ordered McDonald’s through the restaurant’s app. After picking up her food, she said she drove to the University of Kentucky Student Clinic—but again did not go inside. She returned home, where police were waiting.

The Charges

Days later, Snelling was charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

She was released on a $100,000 surety bond and placed under house arrest at her family’s home in Tennessee. Despite the serious charges, a judge ruled she would not be required to wear an electronic monitoring device while awaiting trial.

The case is now headed to a grand jury, which will decide whether to uphold or drop the charges. Prosecutors have also left open the possibility of filing a murder charge, pending the results of the infant’s autopsy.

An Inconclusive Autopsy

The medical examiner’s office reported that initial autopsy results were inconclusive. Additional testing is underway to determine the newborn’s exact cause of death.

If results suggest the baby was alive after birth, prosecutors could pursue more severe charges. For now, Snelling faces felony counts related to concealing and tampering with evidence.

Legal Path Ahead

Snelling has waived her right to a preliminary hearing, signaling her case will move directly before a grand jury. That panel will weigh whether her actions—giving birth alone, allegedly hiding her baby’s body, and failing to seek medical help—rise to the level of criminal homicide.

Her defense has not yet issued a detailed public statement, though her bond suggests her family is supporting her as she awaits the next phase of the legal process.

A Community Stunned

The case has rattled the University of Kentucky community, where Snelling was a cheerleader and student. For many, the contrast between her outwardly normal college life and the grim allegations is difficult to reconcile.

Neighbors and classmates have expressed shock at both the allegations and the disturbing detail that Snelling reportedly ordered fast food in the hours after delivering her child.

“Of all the things you expect to hear about a college cheerleader, this is the last,” one student told local reporters. “It’s tragic no matter how you look at it.”

Unanswered Questions

As the investigation continues, key questions remain: Did Snelling intend to harm her newborn? Was the baby born alive, or had it already died when she fell asleep? And why did she not seek medical help for herself or her child?

Those answers may come only after the autopsy report is finalized and the grand jury delivers its decision. Until then, the case of Laken Snelling remains one of the most haunting and perplexing criminal investigations to emerge from a college campus in recent memory.
