BREAKING: Three Officers Killed, Two Critically Injured in York County Shootout — Gunman Dead

A Pennsylvania community is reeling after a routine warrant service erupted into deadly violence Wednesday afternoon, leaving three police officers dead, two more critically injured, and a suspect dead by suicide.

The confrontation unfolded around 2:10 p.m. in North Codorus Township, approximately 35 miles south of Harrisburg. Officers attempting to serve a warrant at a residence on Haar Road were met with a hail of gunfire from a barricaded suspect, law enforcement sources said.

By the time the gunfire ceased, three officers lay dead. Two more were rushed to WellSpan York Hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition. The suspect, whose name has not yet been released, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, three officials familiar with the case told NBC News.

A crazed gunman opened fire on police officers Wednesday in York County, killing three and critically injuring two more officers.

Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Col. Christopher Paris confirmed the grim toll during an evening press conference alongside Governor Josh Shapiro. “This is a devastating loss,” Paris said, his voice heavy with emotion. “These brave officers put their lives on the line to protect their community. Tonight, three families are mourning loved ones who will never come home.”

Shapiro called for prayers and solidarity. “I’ve been briefed on the situation involving law enforcement in York County and I’m on my way there now,” the governor wrote on X earlier in the afternoon. “We ask those in the area to please follow the directions of local law enforcement.”

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, though law enforcement sources told The Post the incident appeared to be domestic in nature.

The scene quickly drew a massive response from local, state, and federal authorities. Medevac helicopters landed nearby to evacuate the wounded. Residents were urged to avoid the area as emergency units swarmed the neighborhood.

The violence also forced nearby schools into lockdown. The Spring Grove Area School District ordered its six schools to shelter-in-place until police gave the all-clear shortly after 4 p.m. “Today’s incident did not involve our schools or students,” district officials stressed in a statement, “but out of an abundance of caution, we prioritized the safety of students and staff.”

At WellSpan York Hospital, where the injured officers are being treated, heightened security protocols were enacted. “Both patients are in serious condition,” a hospital spokesperson confirmed. “We will share more details as they become available.”

The law enforcement community expressed heartbreak and solidarity online. “It’s another really bad day for York County law enforcement,” the Fairview Township Police Department wrote in a Facebook post, accompanied by a Thin Blue Line flag. “Please keep our brothers and sisters near Spring Grove in your thoughts and prayers.”

U.S. Rep. Lloyd Smucker echoed that sentiment: “Closely monitoring breaking news reports of police officers being injured responding to an incident in York County. Please join me in praying for our first responders and all involved.”

Attorney General Dave Sunday also announced he was traveling to the scene to oversee the investigation.

The names of the killed and injured officers have not been released.

Officials have not yet released the names of the fallen or injured officers, pending notification of families.

The deadly ambush has underscored the risks law enforcement officers face daily. What began as a warrant service — a routine part of policing — escalated into a tragedy that left three officers dead in the line of duty.

Governor Shapiro summed up the devastation at the press conference: “Tonight, York County has lost heroes. Our commonwealth has lost heroes. We will stand with their families, and we will honor their sacrifice.”
