A devastating incident unfolded on Wednesday afternoon in Richmond Hill when a vehicle crashed into a local daycare, resulting in the death of a toddler and leaving another child in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that several others were also injured in the collision that sent shockwaves through the community.

York Regional Police reported that the crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. in the vicinity of Yonge Street and Nottingham Drive. In total, seven children and three staff members sustained injuries. The children involved were all between the ages of one and three, underscoring the profound tragedy of the event.

Among them was a toddler of approximately 18 months who tragically died shortly after being transported to a hospital. Another child remains hospitalized with serious injuries, while the other five children sustained less severe injuries and were also taken to local medical facilities.

Police identified the driver as a 70-year-old man who was apprehended at the scene. Authorities have emphasized that the collision does not appear to have been intentional. “As you can imagine, this was a very chaotic scene,” Constable Kevin Nebrija said. “Initial information suggests that the vehicle was in the parking lot and, for reasons still unknown, drove through the front window of the building. This is an alarming call for any parent to receive, especially at the end of their day.”

At the scene, police confirmed that all children present had been accounted for and that parents had been notified. Observers at the daycare described a scene of destruction and chaos: the front window of the building had been completely shattered, with small blue and green chairs visible through the jagged glass. Numerous police vehicles lined the parking lot, and as evening approached, fire trucks arrived.

Firefighters worked to remove the vehicle—a full-size Hyundai electric model—from the building, placing it onto a tow truck. Although the car appeared largely undamaged, its front license plate hung at an angle, and shards of glass littered the hood.

Constable Nebrija said that at the time of the crash, 96 children were inside the daycare, spread across multiple rooms. Investigators remained at the site, meticulously documenting evidence and reconstructing the sequence of events to determine the extent to which the vehicle entered the building.

Residents in the surrounding neighborhood were visibly shaken by the incident. Farrokh Zandi, who lives directly across from the daycare, recounted that he rushed outside after reading about the crash online. “I just came out to see the police cars and was listening to the news while observing what was happening right in front of me,” he said, describing the event as “very tragic.” Zandi noted that he had always regarded the area as safe and admitted that seeing such an event occur was terrifying. “I am sure the parents must be going through absolute hell,” he added.

Others who witnessed the aftermath expressed similar shock. Faati Tabatabaei, who works at a nearby after-school program, noted that one of the children involved in the crash had come with parents to pick up a sibling. The community’s collective grief was further reflected in the response of Richmond Hill Mayor David West, who visited the scene and described the incident as “unimaginable.”

“It is hard to comprehend a tragedy of this magnitude,” Mayor West said. “This is the worst day I have ever had in this position as mayor. It was an incredibly tragic and horrible day for our city.” He indicated that he intends to meet with the family of the deceased child when the appropriate time comes, acknowledging the immense personal loss they have suffered.

The Richmond Hill incident drew attention to similar tragedies in other regions, including a 2023 crash in which a city bus drove into a daycare, killing two children and injuring six others. In that case, a Quebec Superior Court judge later found the driver not criminally responsible.
