Texas School Bus Overturns on First Day of Class, Leaving Students Seriously Injured

LEANDER, Texas — The first day of school ended in horror for dozens of Texas families Wednesday, when a yellow school bus carrying elementary school students rolled over on a rural two-lane road, leaving multiple children injured — at least one critically — and shattering what should have been a joyful milestone.

Authorities say the Leander Independent School District bus, a 2024 model equipped with seat belts, was carrying 42 children and the driver when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered off the right side of the road and overturned.

A Scene of Chaos

Emergency responders described a chaotic scene: the bus on its side, its roof crumpled, windows shattered, and backpacks scattered across the roadside. Sirens wailed as state troopers, EMS crews, and school officials rushed to help.

Assistant Chief Kevin Parker of Austin-Travis County EMS said at least one person suffered life-threatening injuries, and two others sustained “potentially life-threatening” wounds. Authorities have not confirmed whether those most seriously hurt were children or the bus driver.

In total, 12 people — including the driver — were transported to local hospitals.

First Day Turns to Nightmare

Leander ISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing said the bus had just left the school and was on its afternoon route. None of the children had been dropped off yet. Most on board were elementary school students, their backpacks still filled with fresh supplies.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” Gearing said, his voice heavy with emotion. “We want each of those students and their families to know that our prayers are with them, our thoughts are with them, and we will do everything in our power to support them.”

Parents arrived at the scene in tears, some running toward ambulances, desperate for information. Others clutched their children tightly, still in disbelief.

Unknown Cause, Ongoing Investigation

Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Billy Ray said it was still unclear what caused the crash. Weather conditions were reportedly clear, and there is no indication yet of mechanical failure.

Investigators will examine the bus, review dashcam footage, and interview witnesses. Seat belts — required by Texas law on all new school buses — may have prevented even more serious injuries.

Still, the force of the rollover was devastating. Aerial footage from news helicopters showed deep gouges in the earth where the bus left the roadway, ending in a jagged trail of debris.

Community in Shock

The crash has left the Leander community reeling. Many families spent the day celebrating their children’s return to school, only to end the evening in emergency rooms and waiting areas.

“This was supposed to be a happy day,” said one parent whose child escaped with minor injuries. “Now I can’t stop thinking about the other kids — the ones who might not make it home tonight.”

Counselors will be available at the affected schools in the coming days, district officials confirmed.

A Stark Reminder

While school bus accidents are rare, Wednesday’s crash is a reminder that tragedy can strike at any moment. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration calls school buses the safest form of transportation for children, but no system is infallible.

For now, the focus remains on recovery — and on the children still fighting for their lives in hospital beds.

“This is not how anyone wanted to start the school year,” Superintendent Gearing said quietly. “But this community will rally together, as we always do, for our kids.”
