The quiet community of Dunbar Borough, Pennsylvania, has been shaken by a horrifying case of alleged child abuse and murder. Renesmay Eutsey, 9, was found dead on Wednesday, her body partially submerged in the Youghiogheny River near Smithton in Westmoreland County. Her foster mother, Kourtney Malinda Eutsey, 31, now faces a string of criminal charges, including homicide.
A Disturbing Timeline
According to authorities, Renesmay was last seen alive at home around 2 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27. But despite her disappearance, she was not reported missing until nearly 11 hours later, at 12:41 p.m.
Investigators revealed that an electronic device belonging to the child had pinged inside the residence as late as 6 a.m. — hours before police were contacted.
Later that day, police discovered Renesmay’s body along the banks of the Youghiogheny River, about 20 miles from her home. Wrapped in a bag and showing visible signs of abuse, her death was quickly ruled suspicious.

Signs of Abuse
At a press conference, Fayette County District Attorney Michael Aubele described Renesmay’s condition in heartbreaking terms. The girl weighed just 45 pounds, appeared malnourished, and bore bruises and burns, some resembling cigarette burns.
“It is very apparent that this girl suffered,” Aubele said.
Witnesses corroborated those concerns. One child told investigators she overheard Eutsey and another adult discuss taking Renesmay “to a river far, far away,” before hearing the girl scream. She also reported seeing the foster mother kick Renesmay in the stomach and later physically strike her.
Another chilling moment came when a child in the home reportedly told troopers: “I’m never going to see my baby sister again because she’s in Heaven.”
The Foster Mother’s Account
When questioned by police, Kourtney Eutsey claimed Renesmay had vomited and then choked. She said she attempted to clear the girl’s airway but failed, after which she placed the child’s body in a bag, drove to the river, and left it on the shoreline.
The criminal complaint, however, suggests a far more disturbing narrative of abuse and concealment. Witnesses described Renesmay looking lifeless, with white lips, before her body was removed from the home.
Charges Filed
Eutsey has been charged with:
- Criminal homicide
- Two counts of aggravated assault
- Endangering the welfare of children
- Abuse of a corpse
- Tampering with evidence
- Concealing the death of a child
She is being held without bail at Fayette County Prison. Prosecutors anticipate additional charges pending the results of an autopsy, which will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Children Removed From the Home
Renesmay lived with Eutsey and another adult woman who, at this stage, has not been charged. Three other children residing in the household have since been removed by child protective services.
The revelations have raised troubling questions about how abuse might have gone unnoticed or unreported, and whether systemic failures contributed to Renesmay’s death.

Community and Legal Fallout
The case has sparked outrage and grief across Fayette and Westmoreland counties. Advocacy groups say it highlights the urgent need for stronger child welfare protections and monitoring in foster care arrangements.
“This child’s suffering should never have reached this point,” one child advocacy representative said. “Every warning sign demands attention, and every delay can cost a life.”
Meanwhile, the criminal case against Eutsey is expected to be closely watched as prosecutors build their case around physical evidence, eyewitness testimony, and forensic findings from the autopsy.
A Life Cut Short
For those who knew her, Renesmay is remembered as a gentle child whose short life ended in tragedy. While the legal process unfolds, her story has already become a rallying cry for stronger protections for vulnerable children.
As DA Aubele put it, the case is a stark reminder: “It is very apparent that this girl suffered. And we owe her justice.”
