LOS ANGELES — DC Studios is wasting no time building on the success of Superman, announcing Wednesday that the next installment in the franchise — Man of Tomorrow — will premiere on July 9, 2027.
James Gunn, who wrote and directed Superman, is returning to helm the project, with David Corenswet reprising his role as Clark Kent and Nicholas Hoult set to return as arch-nemesis Lex Luthor.
The announcement comes just weeks after Superman soared past the $600 million mark worldwide, grossing $611 million to date. The film opened July 11 with a $125 million domestic debut and has become the first DC movie since 2022’s The Batman to surpass $300 million domestically — a much-needed boost for the restructured DC cinematic universe.
Gunn unveiled the news on social media alongside original artwork from comic book legend Jim Lee, featuring Superman and Lex Luthor. While Gunn has hinted at plans for the film for some time, he emphasized it won’t be a straightforward sequel.
Superman marked the official reset of the DC Cinematic Universe, with Gunn and Peter Safran now leading DC Studios. The film introduced a wide slate of characters from across the comics, including Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
DC has already laid out an ambitious roadmap for its next phase. Supergirl is slated for release on June 26, 2026, followed by Clayface on September 11, 2026. With Man of Tomorrow now locked for summer 2027, Warner Bros. and DC are signaling confidence that Gunn’s vision will continue to revitalize the brand.
The title itself — Man of Tomorrow — nods to one of Superman’s most enduring nicknames and suggests a story aimed at exploring Clark Kent’s evolving role in the new DC universe.
For fans still buzzing from the success of Superman, the wait for 2027 just became the most anticipated countdown in the comic-book movie calendar.
