$1 Million Yacht Sinks Minutes After Maiden Launch Off Turkish Coast

Eregli, Turkey, Sept. 3, 2025 — What should have been a triumphant maiden voyage ended in disaster on Tuesday when a brand-new luxury yacht, worth nearly $1 million, tipped to one side and sank into the waters of northern Turkey less than 15 minutes after its launch.

The 85-foot vessel, named Dolce Vento, had just been delivered from Istanbul to its new owner and was making its first entry into the Black Sea off the coast of Zonguldak’s Eregli district. Video captured by onlookers shows the sleek yacht gliding into the harbor before lurching sideways, listing heavily, and slipping beneath the waves as crew members scrambled to safety.

Passengers Jump for Their Lives

According to local reports, the owner of the yacht, the captain, and two crew members were forced to abandon ship. All four jumped into the water and swam to shore unharmed. Turkish Coast Guard and port authority teams quickly established a safety perimeter as the vessel disappeared beneath the surface.

Amateur footage shows the surreal scene: the passengers perched briefly on the yacht’s side as it tilted before diving into the sea. Their belongings, including life vests, could be seen floating in the water moments later.

The Dolce Vento launched for the first time Tuesday into the waters off northern Turkey.

A Pricey Investment Gone Wrong

The Dolce Vento was valued at approximately $940,000, a high-end vessel built to cater to luxury leisure markets. Its dramatic sinking has already sparked questions about whether a design flaw or technical failure caused the catastrophe.

Officials at the shipyard said a full investigation is underway. Technical teams are expected to conduct a detailed inspection of the wreck once salvage operations begin.

“The cause of the sinking is under investigation,” a shipyard representative said. “Inspections will determine whether there were construction issues, balance miscalculations, or other technical problems.”

Embarrassment for Luxury Market

The sinking is particularly embarrassing given the vessel’s high value and the prestige associated with such launches. The Turkish yacht-building industry has grown in recent years, exporting luxury craft around the world. This incident, experts say, could cast a shadow over its reputation.

“It’s a nightmare scenario for a shipyard,” one maritime analyst noted. “You have a customer spending close to a million dollars, and instead of celebrating, the yacht sinks on day one. This is going to raise questions about oversight and safety protocols.”

Within minutes, the $940,000 vessel started unsteadily swaying in the water.

Not the First Maritime Mishap

The accident echoes other recent boating disasters. Just last month, a fishing boat carrying 11 passengers began sinking off Pier 1 in Sheepshead Bay, New York, forcing an NYPD Harbor Unit rescue. Earlier this summer, salvage crews in Sicily recovered the Bayesian, a superyacht belonging to British tycoon Mike Lynch, which sank in 2024.

While no lives were lost in the Dolce Vento sinking, the dramatic images of a million-dollar vessel slipping beneath the waves are already circulating widely online, feeding both astonishment and ridicule.

Passengers and crew, including the boat’s owner, sought refuge on the side of the sinking yacht before diving into the water and swimming safely to shore.

Next Steps

The Turkish Coast Guard is expected to oversee the salvage effort in the coming days. For now, the yacht lies at the bottom of the harbor, a cautionary tale of luxury gone wrong.

For the unnamed owner, what was meant to be a dream launch turned into a nightmare within minutes. As one bystander put it: “One moment they were celebrating, the next they were swimming.”
