Wes Moore Laughs Off Trump’s Tall Tale: “Keep Telling Yourself That, Mr. President”

Maryland Governor Wes Moore (D) isn’t buying President Donald Trump’s latest story — and he’s not hiding it.

On Monday, Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that Moore had privately showered him with praise at the Army-Navy football game last December. According to Trump, Moore embraced him, shook his hand, and declared: “You’re the greatest president of my lifetime.”

The president, grinning, claimed he told Moore it was “nice of him to say that,” but that he understood why Moore wouldn’t dare repeat it in public.

Moore’s response? Pure derision. Within hours, he logged onto X to post a video of Trump telling the tale, captioned with a short, dismissive “lol.” He followed up with a jab that landed just as hard: “Keep telling yourself that, Mr. President.”

A War of Words Over Baltimore

The clash was the latest skirmish in an escalating feud between Trump and Moore, fueled by Trump’s threats to send National Guard troops into Baltimore as part of his broader federal “crime crackdown.”

Moore, the state’s first Black governor and a rising Democratic star, has pushed back aggressively. In a recent speech, he challenged Trump to “walk our streets and not just talk about us from the Oval Office.”

Baltimore, long a GOP target in narratives about crime in American cities, has been central to Trump’s attacks. But Moore argues the reality is different: under his leadership, murder rates have fallen to record lows, making Trump’s depiction of the city outdated at best and deliberately misleading at worst.

Trump, characteristically, didn’t hold back. On Truth Social, he mocked Baltimore as “out of control, crime ridden” and accused Moore of avoiding responsibility. “As President, I would much prefer that he clean up this Crime disaster before I go there for a ‘walk,’” Trump posted on Sunday.

Funding Threats and Old Wounds

Trump also threatened to reconsider federal funding to rebuild Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed after a cargo ship collision last year. The remark alarmed local leaders, who see the bridge as vital to the city’s economy and infrastructure recovery.

Moore countered by accusing Trump of playing politics with disaster relief — and of trying to distract from another scandal: the mounting controversy surrounding the Jeffrey Epstein files, which critics have accused Trump’s administration of suppressing.

That deflection struck a nerve. Trump has faced growing questions about his past ties to Epstein, despite repeatedly denying wrongdoing and insisting he distanced himself from the disgraced financier two decades ago. For Moore, the timing of Trump’s Baltimore attacks looked suspiciously convenient.

The Service Record Spat

The feud has also touched on Moore’s military service. A decorated combat veteran, Moore served in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division. Trump, who avoided military service himself, has taken aim at Moore’s record in an attempt to undermine his credibility. Moore, in turn, has dismissed Trump’s attacks as a distraction — one meant to shift attention away from ethics scandals, policy failures, and the Epstein controversy.

Why It Matters Politically

The Moore-Trump showdown has both local and national implications.

For Trump, who thrives on personal grudges, Baltimore has become a symbolic battlefield in his broader narrative of “Democrat-run cities in decline.” By targeting Moore, Trump hits at a rising Democratic voice who embodies the kind of multiracial, progressive leadership he seeks to discredit.

For Moore, the spat elevates his profile beyond Maryland. His sharp, meme-ready responses — from “walk our streets” to a simple “lol” — have resonated with Democrats eager to see their leaders punch back against Trump in real time.

Political analysts note that the exchange could boost Moore’s standing with younger voters and progressives, who often lament that Democratic officials fail to match Trump’s fire with fire of their own.

“Greatest President”? Not Quite.

Trump’s insistence that Moore secretly called him the “greatest president of my lifetime” may have been designed to embarrass the governor, forcing him to either deny it and look disloyal, or stay silent and let speculation fester. Instead, Moore flipped the script — turning Trump’s boast into the butt of the joke.

The result was a viral moment that underscored their fundamental contrast: Trump, the showman spinning improbable tales from behind the Resolute Desk, and Moore, the disciplined soldier-politician who reduces the president’s ego to a punchline.
