What Nykia Hamilton’s Story Reveals About Fast-Food Labor in America

In the summer of 2025, a 25-year-old single mother named Nykia Hamilton found herself at the center of a national conversation about work, resilience, and corporate responsibility. What began as a seemingly ordinary shift at a Burger King in Columbia, South Carolina, turned into a viral moment that highlighted both her determination and the challenges facing many workers in the fast-food industry.

In early July, a customer filmed Hamilton working entirely alone in the restaurant. The footage quickly spread across social media, showing her rushing from the grill to the fryer, preparing burgers and chicken sandwiches, filling drink orders, manning the front counter, and even handling the drive-thru—all without a single coworker to assist her.

The video was first posted on TikTok on July 6 and immediately struck a nerve with viewers. For many, it was not just about the impressive way she kept everything running; it was about what her situation represented—an overworked mother stretched to the limits, trying to provide for her children under circumstances that no employee should face.

One customer who witnessed the scene remarked that Hamilton was effectively doing the job of “five or six people” all by herself. Online commenters echoed that sentiment, flooding the post with messages of support and outrage. Some praised her for her dedication, calling her a “queen” who deserved not only recognition but also a raise.

Others were furious with the company, labeling the incident “shameful” and accusing Burger King of showing little regard for its employees or customers. The response reflected a growing frustration with low wages, understaffing, and burnout across the service industry.

As her story spread, many suggested that Hamilton should start a GoFundMe campaign to help support her family. She eventually did so, explaining in her campaign description that as a single mother of three with a criminal record, steady employment had not always come easily. She credited her Burger King manager for giving her a chance and described the job as a lifeline that helped her provide for her children.

Burger King’s corporate office eventually issued a statement after the video went viral. The company emphasized that no employee should ever be left to run a restaurant by themselves and pointed out that official policy requires multiple team members per shift. They admitted that the situation represented a breakdown in procedure and pledged to follow up with the franchise owner responsible for the location.

But just as public sympathy for Hamilton reached its peak, another twist emerged. In early August—one month after the original video spread—she announced in a tearful TikTok post that she had been fired. Speaking directly to her followers on August 8, Hamilton explained that her dismissal was due to “repeated attendance issues.” She clarified that her lateness was tied to her role as a mother, stating, “My kids come first. Y’all don’t pay for no babysitter, or nothing.”

Hamilton went on to describe the toll her work schedule had taken on her personal life. She often picked up extra shifts, sometimes working more than 12 hours at a time, in order to provide for her children. Yet those long hours meant she missed important milestones in her kids’ lives, and the emotional weight of that sacrifice was evident in her voice. Her story resonated deeply with parents who know the struggle of balancing childcare with inflexible work demands.

Burger King clarified that because it operates primarily through a franchise model, it is ultimately franchisees—not the corporate office—who make hiring and firing decisions. A spokesperson confirmed that Hamilton’s termination was related to attendance and reiterated that they could not discuss specific personnel matters. Still, the company acknowledged disappointment that its staffing policies had not been followed at the Columbia location and promised to work on improving support for employees in similar situations.

Online, however, not everyone accepted the official explanation. Some social media users speculated that Hamilton had been dismissed for drawing negative attention to the company. One Reddit commenter suggested that her viral fame embarrassed Burger King and that management may have sought to remove her to avoid further scrutiny. While these claims remain unverified, the theories reflect how quickly speculation can spread once a story captures widespread attention.

In the wake of her firing, Hamilton’s GoFundMe campaign surged with donations. Reports indicated that she raised more than $90,000—some outlets citing figures above $81,000, while others reported over $90,000. In her campaign message, Hamilton expressed gratitude and reiterated her devotion to her children: “I am a 25-year-old single mom of three who works two jobs. I just went viral for working on TikTok… I wasn’t expecting my life to change how it did. I really do everything for my kids.”
