Brandon Blackstock, a music industry talent manager and former husband of Grammy-winning singer Kelly Clarkson, has died at the age of 48 following a lengthy battle with cancer.
A representative for the Blackstock family confirmed the news in a statement to CNN on Thursday, saying, “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Brandon Blackstock has passed away. Brandon bravely battled cancer for more than three years. He passed away peacefully and was surrounded by family. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time.”
The heartbreaking announcement came just one day after Clarkson revealed she would be pausing the remainder of her Las Vegas residency, citing Blackstock’s health struggles.
“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” Clarkson shared in an Instagram statement on Wednesday night. “I am sincerely sorry to everyone who bought tickets to the shows and I so appreciate your grace, kindness and understanding.”
The couple share two children — daughter River, born in 2014, and son Remington, born in 2016.
Blackstock, who came from a prominent country music family, was the son of Narvel Blackstock, CEO of Nashville-based talent management firm Starstruck, whose clients have included Blake Shelton and Carly Pearce. His father married country music legend Reba McEntire in 1989, and she helped raise Brandon from the age of 12 until their divorce in 2015.
Following in his family’s footsteps, Blackstock pursued a career in the music industry, working in talent management. His professional path ultimately led him to Clarkson.

The pair first met briefly at the Academy of Country Music Awards in 2006, but it wasn’t until 2012 at Super Bowl XLVI — where Clarkson sang the national anthem and Shelton performed “America the Beautiful” — that they reconnected. At the time, Blackstock was Shelton’s manager.
The couple married in 2013 in an intimate elopement. Blackstock went on to serve as Clarkson’s manager and a producer on her award-winning daytime program, The Kelly Clarkson Show.
After seven years of marriage, Clarkson filed for divorce in 2020, citing “irreconcilable differences.” Their divorce was finalized in 2022 after a contentious legal process. Clarkson agreed to a one-time payment of $1.3 million to Blackstock, $115,000 per month in spousal support until January 2024, and monthly child support.
Despite the difficult split, McEntire publicly expressed love and support for both Clarkson and Blackstock during a 2021 appearance on Extra. “I love the both of them with all my heart,” McEntire said. “I pray everyone gives them the encouragement they can because they need it right now — both of them do.”
Tributes have already begun to pour in for Blackstock, who was remembered by friends and colleagues as a dedicated father, a respected music industry figure, and someone who fought his illness with courage.
For Clarkson, the loss is a deeply personal tragedy. She now turns her focus entirely to her children, who have lost their father far too soon. In the wake of his passing, fans have flooded her social media with messages of sympathy, offering prayers and sharing memories of happier times the couple once shared.
Brandon Blackstock’s life, while cut short, was marked by his passion for music, his devotion to family, and his resilience in the face of one of life’s most difficult battles. He leaves behind a legacy woven into the fabric of the country music industry — and in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
