“The River Took Everything”: Missing Malaysian Family of Six Found Dead in Submerged Car

KEDAH, MALAYSIA — What began as a missing persons case ended in heartbreaking tragedy Monday when six bodies — a couple and their four young children — were discovered in a car submerged in the Sungai Korok river.

The family, missing for two days, was last seen in a silver Proton Iswara. That same vehicle was found partially visible under the river’s murky surface when water levels finally receded — revealing a sliver of metal that led searchers to the horrific truth.

Rescue teams raced to the site, where they pried open the car’s roof and shattered the windows to retrieve the lifeless bodies inside. The father, 32, and the mother, 31, were seated in the front. Behind them, their four children — aged just six months to nine years — were tightly huddled in the back seat.

At the riverbank, grief hung heavy in the air as family members cried out in disbelief. Onlookers stood in solemn silence as emergency crews carried out the victims one by one, wrapped in white sheets.

“We’ve been searching non-stop,” said Nor Syafiqah Ishak, the younger brother of the man believed to be the father. “The river is wide and deep, and the water has been too murky to see anything. But this morning… someone saw the car’s bonnet, and we came straight here.”

There were no skid marks. No broken barriers. No nearby homes that heard a crash. For 48 hours, the family had vanished — with no clues left behind.

The heartbreaking discovery raises more questions than answers.

What happened in those final moments? Did the car slip off the road in the dark? Did rain or poor visibility play a role?

Local fire and rescue authorities confirmed they received an emergency call Monday morning after a passerby noticed the faint outline of a vehicle protruding from the river’s edge. Responders arrived quickly and confirmed it was the missing family’s car.

“It’s devastating,” one firefighter said. “We train for all kinds of rescues, but when you see four small children… there are no words.”

Police have launched an official investigation, though early reports suggest the incident may have been an accident. Autopsies will be performed, and authorities plan to examine the road conditions near the riverbank for any signs of tire tracks or road erosion.

The family had been last seen traveling together on Saturday evening. When they failed to arrive at their destination — and calls went unanswered — relatives reported them missing. From that moment on, the community sprang into action, organizing search efforts and scouring nearby roads and waterways.

For two long days, there was only hope.

Then came Monday. And with it, a grief that rippled across the town of Kedah.

Photos of the children circulated online in the hours following the discovery — smiling, playful, innocent. Their names have not been officially released, pending identification by family.

On social media, Malaysians expressed an outpouring of sympathy and disbelief. Many called for improved road safety measures near the river, while others simply shared prayers and condolences.

“May they rest in peace,” one comment read. “And may the river never hide something like this again.”

This isn’t just a local tragedy. It’s a haunting reminder of how life — even six lives — can vanish without a sound.
