Pam Bondi Orders Grand Jury to Investigate Obama Officials Over Russia Probe, Fueled by Gabbard’s Claims

In a move set to reignite years-old political firestorms, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has ordered federal prosecutors to convene a grand jury investigating top officials from the Obama administration over their handling of the Russia investigation—alleging the entire case was built on falsified intelligence to smear Donald Trump.

The bombshell decision, first reported by Fox News and later confirmed by CNN, follows a controversial referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who declassified a tranche of documents in July that she claims undermine previous conclusions about Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

The grand jury, according to a source familiar with the matter, will have full subpoena power and could recommend indictments should the DOJ choose to pursue criminal charges.

Gabbard’s Role: Catalyst or Chaos?

It all began with a declassification push by Gabbard—herself a political lightning rod—who claimed that Obama-era intelligence officials distorted the truth about Russia’s intentions during the 2016 election. She alleged that the effort to investigate the Trump campaign for Russian ties was itself a “coordinated disinformation campaign” by Democratic leadership.

Her claims were echoed by Bondi, who announced shortly after Gabbard’s referral that the Justice Department had formed a dedicated “strike force” to sift through the declassified materials and prepare next steps.

But national security experts and intelligence veterans say the claims are thin at best—and deliberately misleading at worst.

“This doesn’t change the fundamental findings of the 2017 intelligence report,” said one former intelligence official who reviewed the documents. “Russia’s goal was to interfere with the election and sow chaos—and yes, to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton. That hasn’t changed.”

Indeed, CNN reports that while Gabbard claims the documents paint a different picture, they do not undercut the intelligence community’s core conclusion: Russia ran a coordinated hacking and influence operation targeting the 2016 election to hurt Clinton and help Trump.

Weaponizing the DOJ?

Bondi’s decision to escalate the matter to a grand jury is already sparking criticism from legal scholars and watchdog groups who say the move reeks of political retribution—especially given that it targets former President Barack Obama and his top aides.

“There is no credible legal precedent for what’s happening here,” said Norm Eisen, former White House ethics lawyer. “This is not about justice. This is about weaponizing the Justice Department to wage political warfare against opponents.”

Bondi, a longtime Trump ally and a vocal defender of his during both impeachment trials, has faced repeated accusations of politicizing her role as Attorney General. Her latest move may further inflame concerns that the Justice Department has become a tool for partisan revenge.

Timing and Consequences

The grand jury announcement comes amid rising public distrust in government institutions, with Trump loyalists demanding accountability for what they call the “Russiagate hoax,” and critics warning of authoritarian overreach.

For now, no indictments have been issued, and the Justice Department has declined to comment. But with the grand jury’s launch, subpoenas could start flying within weeks—and former Obama officials, including top members of the intelligence and national security community, may soon be called to testify.

Whether the case uncovers new evidence—or simply rehashes a debunked narrative—is a question that could define the 2026 election cycle.

One thing is clear: the Trump-era playbook of investigating the investigators is back. And this time, it’s wearing a badge.
