Once allies on the MAGA trail, Donald Trump and Elon Musk have now turned on each other in a spectacle so volatile it’s shaking Washington, Wall Street—and even outer space. With impeachment calls, Epstein accusations, and billion-dollar threats in the mix, the country is watching a surreal power feud play out in real time.
What began as a powerful political bromance has exploded into an all-out war between President Donald Trump and tech titan Elon Musk, with shocking consequences for both politics and the economy.
In a viral exchange on X (formerly Twitter), Musk gave a chilling one-word reply—“Yes”—to a user suggesting Trump be impeached and replaced by Vice President J.D. Vance, the 40-year-old rising GOP star. It’s a stunning reversal from just months ago, when Musk was campaigning alongside Trump and investing nearly $300 million into his re-election efforts.
But the billionaire didn’t stop at impeachment. He dropped a financial warning, predicting that Trump’s aggressive new tariff policy would cause a recession by the end of the year.
“The Trump tariffs will cause a recession in the second half of this year,” Musk warned bluntly—spooking markets and sending Tesla stock tumbling as the feud escalated.
And then came the nuclear accusation: Musk claimed Trump’s name appears in the sealed files of Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender whose death and ties to global elites continue to haunt American politics. “@RealDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,” Musk posted. “Have a nice day, DJT.”
The White House has yet to respond to that bombshell directly. Trump himself waved off questions about the charge and instead doubled down on his support for the “Big, Beautiful Bill” currently in Congress—an omnibus spending plan that Musk opposes fiercely.

“The truth will come out,” Musk promised in another cryptic post.
But perhaps the most consequential part of Musk’s fury lies in the skies. He threatened to decommission the Dragon spacecraft, the SpaceX vehicle that currently carries NASA astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station. In essence, Musk was willing to shut down a vital pillar of American space operations.
“Go ahead, make my day…” Musk taunted Trump after the president threatened to terminate SpaceX and Tesla’s government contracts, claiming they were no longer in the country’s best interest.
The tension burst into full public view when Trump pulled the nomination of Jared Isaacman, Musk’s longtime ally and collaborator, to lead NASA. Trump said the choice was too partisan and “inappropriate” for a Republican administration. Musk, furious over both that move and the rollback of electric vehicle subsidies, appeared to reach his breaking point.
Behind the scenes, GOP strategists say the rift is throwing the party into chaos. Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer reported from Capitol Hill that Republican lawmakers are now split—with some considering whether to align with Musk instead of Trump.
Adding fuel to the fire, Trump’s longtime ally Steve Bannon called Musk a “national security threat” and urged a formal investigation into his immigration status.
“I am of the strong belief that he is an illegal alien and should be deported immediately,” Bannon told The New York Times, later branding Musk an “unstable individual.”
For his part, Trump tried to downplay the drama, claiming he had already grown tired of Musk. “Elon was wearing thin,” Trump said. “I asked him to leave.”
Still, the president mocked Musk for being upset over losing billions in subsidies tied to green energy. “They want us to pay billions of dollars in subsidy. I know that disturbed him,” Trump said, claiming Musk had pushed for Jared Isaacman’s NASA appointment, despite his “totally Democrat” leanings.

While Trump shrugged off Musk’s betrayal as “expected,” Musk insists he was the one who rescued Trump’s political career after the 2024 assassination attempt.
“Without me, Trump would have lost the election. Dems would control the House. Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk wrote. “Such ingratitude.”
Even Kanye West weighed in, begging the two to reconcile. “Broooos please noooooo. We love you both so much,” the rapper posted on X.
But the damage appears done. Musk ended the week by warning Trump that he may be president for another 3.5 years, “but I’ll be around for 40+.”
Whether this is the end of Trump’s tech alliance—or the beginning of a new Musk-backed political empire—remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Washington has never seen a fight quite like this.
