A tragic and deeply unsettling case of domestic violence has rocked the small town of Haubstadt, Indiana, where a 77-year-old man is facing multiple murder charges after allegedly killing three of his family members and critically injuring a fourth.
On what seemed like a typical Tuesday afternoon, Patrick Waite made a chilling phone call to 911, informing dispatchers in a composed and measured tone that he had just shot his wife, mother-in-law, and stepson. He also admitted to shooting another stepson, who was still alive but severely wounded.
“I shot them all. I’m certainly not proud of that fact,” Waite said during the 911 call, a line that has since echoed throughout the community as a stark reminder of how quickly domestic tensions can escalate into violence. The call triggered an emergency response from local authorities, who arrived to find a grisly crime scene and a man who offered no resistance as he peacefully surrendered.

The victims in the case were all close family members of Waite. His 61-year-old wife, Alma Waite, was found deceased, as were her 81-year-old mother, Gloria Tapia, and 39-year-old son, Fernando Tapia Ramirez Sr. The fourth victim, Juan Tapia Ramirez, age 44, survived the attack but suffered gunshot wounds to his chest and neck. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Four other people, including a child, were inside the house at the time of the shootings but were not harmed, according to investigators. Their survival has been called “miraculous” by family members, given the deadly outburst that took place in such close quarters.
Police later revealed the shooting spree was likely the result of a bitter domestic dispute. Court documents suggest tensions had been simmering for some time between Waite and his wife. On the day of the incident, Waite had reportedly gone outside to shoot a watersnake near a pond on his 1.5-acre property. He returned to the house still carrying the firearm—a .45-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun—which sparked an argument with Alma, who objected to him bringing a loaded weapon into their home.
The confrontation intensified quickly. Waite and his wife allegedly argued not just about the gun but also over issues that had built up in recent weeks or even years. According to Waite’s statement to police, Alma accused him of failing to help care for her bedridden mother, Gloria, who had recently suffered a stroke.
She also reportedly confronted him over his lack of participation in bible study and claimed she had legally transferred ownership of their home to her daughter using a quitclaim deed. Waite, in turn, argued that the house was rightfully his, citing that he had lived there for nearly three decades.
The emotionally charged exchange appears to have pushed Waite over the edge. What followed was an eruption of violence that left three generations of a family torn apart.
After the shootings, Waite placed the now-infamous 911 call. He calmly explained what had occurred and even expressed a desire to inform his children of the tragedy before police arrived. Responding officers encountered him waiting outside and took him into custody without incident.
Waite has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder. He made his first court appearance shortly after his arrest and entered a plea of not guilty. He is currently being held without bond as the investigation continues.
The killings have left both the family and the local community reeling. Veronica Valenzuela, a cousin of the victims, told reporters she was shocked by the news. She described Waite as a friendly and generous person who had previously welcomed her family with open arms, taking them out to eat and on outings to local casinos. “He seemed like such a nice man,” she said, still struggling to comprehend how things could have ended so violently.
She also spoke tenderly about her cousin Gloria Tapia, who was bedridden at the time of her death. Tapia had been in fragile health, having recently suffered a debilitating stroke, which made her killing all the more heart-wrenching. Valenzuela has since launched a GoFundMe campaign in an effort to raise funds for funeral costs, calling the event “a nightmare” for the family.

As the legal process unfolds, many in the community are left grappling with unanswered questions. How could a man in his late seventies, known to many as mild-mannered and family-oriented, commit such a horrific act? What were the warning signs, and could anything have been done to prevent it?
The case has reignited conversations around domestic violence, mental health, and the complexities of familial relationships. Experts stress the importance of seeking mediation and support when tensions at home begin to escalate, especially in blended families or households dealing with caregiving responsibilities and financial disputes.
This tragedy serves as a grim reminder that unresolved family issues, especially when combined with the presence of firearms, can have devastating consequences. For now, Haubstadt mourns the loss of three of its residents and prays for the recovery of a fourth, while also confronting the difficult task of coming to terms with the actions of a man they thought they knew.
