Study Finds Ingredient in Energy Drinks May Fuel Leukemia Growth

A new study has raised serious questions about a popular ingredient found in energy drinks and its potential link to cancer progression. Researchers have discovered that taurine, a non-essential amino acid commonly added to energy drinks, may significantly fuel the growth of leukemia, according to findings published in the prestigious journal Nature.

The study, conducted by scientists at the University of Rochester, revealed that taurine is a key regulator of myeloid cancers, including various forms of leukemia—a group of cancers that originate in the bone marrow and affect blood cell production.

Taurine occurs naturally in the human body, particularly in the bone marrow, brain, heart, and muscles. It is also present in many common foods like meat, fish, and eggs. But in recent years, taurine has gained popularity as a featured ingredient in energy drinks, pre-workout supplements, and protein powders, many of which are consumed by athletes, gym-goers, and even cancer patients looking to regain strength.

What scientists have now discovered is that leukemia cells cannot synthesize taurine on their own. Instead, they extract it directly from the bone marrow microenvironment, using a specialized taurine transporter that shuttles the amino acid into the cancer cells.

Once inside the cancer cells, taurine accelerates a metabolic process called glycolysis, which is the breakdown of glucose to produce energy. In cancer cells, glycolysis is often supercharged, enabling the cancer to grow and spread more aggressively. By feeding this process, taurine effectively acts as fuel for leukemia.

“This is a completely new understanding of how cancer cells interact with their environment,” said the study’s lead author, whose team used both mouse models and human leukemia samples to verify the findings. “We were surprised to see just how dependent leukemia cells are on external sources of taurine.”

Blocking Taurine, Blocking Cancer

The good news? When scientists blocked taurine uptake in leukemia cells—by targeting the transporter gene—they were able to halt cancer progression in lab mice and in human cell samples. This breakthrough could pave the way for new therapies aimed at starving leukemia cells of taurine, thereby impeding their ability to grow.

But while the results are promising, experts are urging caution.

Dr. Vijay Yadav, an associate professor at Rutgers University and an expert in taurine biology, emphasized that the findings are preliminary and based on animal models. Speaking to Health.com, Yadav explained that more research in human subjects is needed before any definitive conclusions can be made.

“We need to wait until we have solid human data,” he said. “Taurine is a complex molecule and its effects can change dramatically depending on the biological context.”

Should You Avoid Taurine?

The immediate reaction for some may be to swear off taurine entirely—but experts say that’s not necessary.

According to Health.com, nutritionists and oncologists alike caution that the study doesn’t suggest taurine causes cancer. Instead, it appears that taurine feeds the disease once it has already developed—especially in specific forms of myeloid leukemia.

“It’s not about taurine being a carcinogen,” said a dietitian not involved in the study. “It’s about how cancer cells hijack normal biological functions to their own advantage.”

Still, the research does raise questions about the widespread use of taurine in energy products, particularly for individuals at higher risk of blood cancers or those undergoing treatment.

“It’s probably wise to limit consumption of energy drinks, especially for patients with leukemia or other blood-related illnesses,” Yadav added.

A Closer Look at Energy Drinks

Taurine has long been a staple ingredient in many popular energy drinks, marketed for its supposed benefits in improving physical endurance, alertness, and cognitive function. Despite limited evidence to back some of those claims, the compound remains widely consumed—especially among teenagers and young adults.

With the new findings, researchers are calling for greater scrutiny of energy drink ingredients, particularly for vulnerable populations. The study also underscores the urgent need for improved labeling and public awareness about what these products contain and how they may interact with specific health conditions.

What’s Next?

The University of Rochester team is now planning further research to explore taurine’s impact on other types of cancers and to determine whether taurine blockers could serve as a viable treatment strategy in the future.

Until then, the message from experts remains measured: moderation is key. While taurine is naturally found in many healthy foods, its concentrated form in energy supplements could be problematic in specific medical contexts.
