Former U.S. President Joe Biden (82) is battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer, a diagnosis that has sparked waves of support—and a wave of controversy after a response from Donald Trump’s camp.
Following the announcement from Biden’s medical team, which emphasized that the illness is serious but manageable with treatment, tributes and well-wishes poured in from across the political spectrum. Yet it was the reaction from Biden’s predecessor, Donald Trump, and especially his son, that triggered a firestorm.
Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of the former president, took to social media not with sympathy, but with mockery.
In a now-viral post, Trump Jr. shared a meme mocking the announcement from Biden’s medical team, questioning the timing and even the credibility of the diagnosis. He went further, suggesting that the diagnosis was “strategically announced” to garner sympathy and distract from what he called “failures” of the Biden administration.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if this is all a show,” he wrote. “They’ll do anything to avoid talking about the disaster that is Joe Biden’s presidency. Now they’re using cancer.”
His comments were met with swift and furious backlash from both medical professionals and political analysts, who accused Trump Jr. of spreading conspiracy theories and politicizing a serious health issue.
One analyst said: “This is a moment for compassion. Whatever your politics, illness is not a joke. This behavior is shameful and beneath the dignity of any public figure.”
White House spokespersons have declined to respond to Trump Jr.’s remarks directly, instead focusing on Biden’s treatment plan and his optimistic outlook. According to Biden’s medical team, the cancer was discovered early enough to respond well to therapy, and the president remains “fully engaged” with his duties.
Still, the timing of the statement, coming amid a heated election season, has raised questions in some corners—though most officials have firmly rejected the idea that it was politically motivated.
Biden’s wife, First Lady Jill Biden, issued a brief but emotional statement: “We’re facing this challenge as a family, with strength and faith. Joe is a fighter, and I believe in him.”
As the nation watches Biden’s health journey unfold, the contrast between messages of support and the cruel politicization from some quarters has become stark. One thing remains clear: for many, when it comes to health and human suffering, decency should still matter.
