Horror in NSW: Grandmother Arrested After Two Young Boys Found Dead in Coonabarabran Home

A small Australian town has been left shattered after two young boys, aged six and seven, were found dead at a home in Coonabarabran, New South Wales—allegedly at the hands of their own grandmother.

Emergency services rushed to the rural property on Monday afternoon after the 66-year-old woman reportedly contacted the Department of Communities and Justice and chillingly told staff that the boys were dead. Local police were immediately dispatched for a welfare check—and upon entering the home, discovered the unresponsive bodies of the two children.

The woman, who has not yet been named publicly, was found at the scene and taken to hospital under police guard. While no charges have yet been laid, sources told news.com.au that investigators believe the boys may have been smothered.

A crime scene has been established, and detectives from Sydney’s homicide squad have joined the local investigation team under the guidance of NSW’s State Crime Command. Police have confirmed they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with the deaths and reassured the public there is no broader threat to the community.

The tragedy has shocked the tight-knit town of Coonabarabran, a regional community of fewer than 3,500 people.

“Two little firecracker kids!” one devastated loved one wrote on social media. “They were amongst it all—100 miles an hour, involved in soccer, karate, wild as march hares, and cute as buttons.”

A 66-year-old, also at the home, was taken into the local police station for questioning

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb called the case a “terrible, terrible tragedy,” and Premier Chris Minns echoed the grief, saying the state “shares in the community of Coonabarabran’s grief at the loss of two young boys who had their entire futures ahead of them.”

Investigations are ongoing, and the town is left searching for answers while grieving an unthinkable loss.
