The Vatican has released a solemn video this morning showing the body of Pope Francis, following the traditional Catholic ritual of death verification and preparation for burial.
In the video, the late pontiff is seen laid in a plain wooden coffin, holding a rosary between his hands. He is dressed in red liturgical vestments with a mitre resting on his head. The footage was captured one day after Pope Francis passed away from complications following a stroke in his apartment at the Domus Sanctae Marthae.
Standing beside the coffin are members of the Swiss Guard and Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State.
Pope Francis’s body remains in the Domus Sanctae Marthae, where he had been recovering after spending more than a month in Rome’s Gemelli Hospital due to pneumonia.

According to the Vatican’s official schedule, the body will be transferred tomorrow to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the faithful will have an opportunity to pay their final respects.
The funeral of Pope Francis is expected to take place between Friday, April 25, and Sunday, April 27. The exact date will be confirmed later today during the first General Congregation of Cardinals convened in Rome.
As per his final wishes stated in his will, Pope Francis will be buried at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four major basilicas of Rome, marking a departure from recent tradition that saw previous popes interred beneath St. Peter’s Basilica.
